Denis Pagan speaks to 19s before big wins!
AFL Super coach Denis Pagan gave a talk to the U/19 group at a team BBQ held at the Mugavin's home last Friday night.
.
Denis's words of wisdom certainly helped with both 19 sides getting up for great wins and completing a clean sweep for the club!

Rd 12: CLEAN SWEEP! ... Bernards Boys Bounce Back with 5 from 5!

Seniors: Slick Bernards too hot for Marcellin!
.
The pressure was on, second spot was up for grabs as the boys faced a rampant Marcellin at Bulleen and the boys responded with a super team performance!
.
A few very handy inclusions helped with proven A grade players, Captain D Mac, Cal Potter, Gary McIntyre and Ryan Schroder providing a good start. Daniel Janides and Libba gave us run and with VAFA State reps Danny Roach and Tom Caven on fire early the Bernards boys took control.

.

.
Jesse Manunzio, Tom Godsell and Kyle Dalmau lead the rousing rendition!

Luke 'Lossa' O'Sullivan playing his 150th game continued his recent good form, Joey Indomenico racked up the possies and George Garth shut down Marcellin star Matt Bortelotto. Young Tommy Godsell made a promising debut, supporting Andrew Stapo who did a great job in the ruck. Tate Pearson was dangerous up forward, youngsters Tom Overman and Alex Jolley kept popping up and Jesse Manunzio  gave us a lift off the bench in only his second game.

Senior coach Simon Madden summed it up in the packed Bernards rooms after the game ... "Today we did all the things we planned to do, if we work hard and stick to our running game we are a dangerous side"
.

.
Lossa chalks up his 150th!

Luke 'Lossa' O'Sullivan shone in
his 150th game. Well done Lossa!

Football Director Paul Garth pointed to an interesting stat ... "Tommy Godsell's debut today brings the debutant tally to seven already this year and fourteen in the past 12 months, All of these blokes are 18/19 year olds. We will continue to develop our young list and with some of our experienced senior players back and firing we have a lot of improvement to come".

Reserves: Ressie Mean Machine Mauls Marcellin!

Despite having a battalion out the Ressies simply powered over Marcellin with another emphatic win. The blokes that came up from the Warriors slotted in nicely. Paddy Harris helped himself to a lazy 8 goals but it was the great work of Steve 'Snaz' Iannazzo, Andrew Smith, Chris Davis and Josh Ryan that set up the win.
.
Others to shine included Mick Maloney, Matty Hughes, AJ Mitchell and the evergreen Jurra. James Mount and Tim Raff played their first game of Reserves for the year and aquitted themselves well.

Warriors: 'The Fox' Inspires Hordes in Huge Upset!

At the campfire Thursday night there were rumblings ... "Our leader Snaz remains away on his trek and won't be back for another moon .. his deputy Viddo has gone to the Northern Crusade and with our finest off to fight in Bulleen, how can we overcome the rampant Blacks? ... enter 'the Fox'!

While few of the hordes can recall his precise words James 'the Fox' Hughes made the battle plan clear ... "FXXX em! lets win!" and with that brief but bold command the undermanned hordes descended upon the 'top of the ladder' Blacks with a passion!

Daniel 'the Maniac' McManus led the charge Gary 'Junkyard Dog' Joseph repelled the Blacks attack, Paul 'Gruesome' Gilmore racked up the scalps alongside Tom 'the Terrible' Isaacs. Every Warrior gave his all but the old warhorse himself Luke 'the Vengeful' Vassallo swung the axe through the Blacks hearts with six majors!

After the kill 'the wily Fox' called the hordes together ... "Warriors, what you did today only adds to the legend, and more importantly gives us the double chance!"

"Snaz 'the Invincible Ianazzo' has just sent word .. he will be back to lead us in battle next up ... he has ordered the long ships ready ... we row the Maribynong south before crossing the seas and beaching on the coast of Bwyton! .. sharpen your spears, its a six chook kill ... and then the hordes roared as the Fox decreed ... "there will be no mercy!"

St Bernards: 17.7 (119) def
St Kevs: 9.5 (59)

Amongst a strong team effort our best were  Josh Kassis, Michael Angel, Tom Dyndham, Mick Leddin, Nic Cooke, and David Rye.

Well done boys, now lets look to repeat the dose and create some havoc in the Premier comp over the next six weeks!

Under 19 (2): Pups make it 5 from 5!
Pete van Meel's pups have been stiff the last two weeks but today it was the pups turn to get the chocolates and set up a clean sweep for the club with all five sides winning.

Peter Vilani starred with great support from Adam Stefano, Pat Gamwell, Nick Hughes, Michael Ramsay and Owen McIntyre.

Well done boys after two close misses over the past fortnight.

Miracles 50th Becomes Big Bernards Birthday Bash!

'Miracle' Mel Beyer celebrated his 50th birthday at the Snakepit in style on Sunday after he coached the U16's to a win earlier in the day. Aside from coaching the 16's Mel is Team Manager of the Reserves and Statastician for the Seniors and of course drives the Bernards van with all the gear every Saturday ... what would we do without Mel on the weekends? Pictured below are twelve of Mel's Captains starting from Luke Rogers (1992) through to Luke Larsen (2008)!

Trevor Lancaster VAFA's Master Timekeeper
.
Congrats to Trevor Lancaster who was recently asked to officiate at the VAFA State game. Trev has had his hand on the button at 'the Pit' for years doing both Reserves and Senior games every Saturday.

If you've ever wondered why Bernards quarters seem to go a bit longer its because Trevor is ever the perfectionist adding every milli second of time on ... something his AFL counterparts could learn from. Trevor even fills out the scorecard perfectly!

Its blokes like Trev that make Bernards match days operate so professionally ... well done Trev!

Roachy in VAFA Senior State Team

Danny Roach was selected at CHB for the VAFA Senior State side that narrowly defeated AFL NSW in Sydney on the long weekend. Chris Liberatore was first emergency and Tom Caven was named full back for the VAFA U19 State side against the AFL Qld U21 State team at the Gabba.

Bazz still chugging on nicely

A familiar sight at every St Bernards game is Barry McAntee. Barry is one of a number of characters at 'the Pit' that do more than just turn up at games.
.
Whether its filling the water bottles, jumping in as interchange steward or escorting the umpires Barry does every job with an enthusiastic smile.
.
Each game Bazz arrives early with master timekeeper Trevor Lancaster and reports straight to Garthy to ask “what do you need me to do first boss?”
.
Theres a lot to be done on match days and its blokes like Barry McAntree that make it happen.

Keep up the great work Baz!

A Brief History of the Veterans Challenge Cup

The Returned & Services League through the Keilor East Branch struck a special perpetual trophy in 2003, the Veterans Challenge Cup in honour of those who have 'served the nation' and joined with St Bernards OCFC in celebrating Anzac Day through a special ‘challenge match.'

The match is played on a St Bernards home game closest to Anzac Day. The ‘best player' is awarded the H & C Lambert Medal and receives a replica cup to recognise his performance.

Both Harold and Chris Lambert played with Essendon. Chris missed plenty of football due to War Service, but earned state representation homours. Harold Lambert played 98 games (1940 - 51) including the 1946, 49 and 50 Premiership sides. Chris Lambert played 139 games (1939 – 51) including the 1946, 50 Premiership sides. A staggering six premierships between them. For details and pictures of this years Anzac Challenge Cup go to RESULTS page > Round 3

  The Bob Hampson Award:

Chris Spinella

Starting this year is a unique new award in that it can only be won during the first match of each season. The award goes to the St Bernards OC FC player, representing St Bernards OC FC 1st XVIII, who scores the club's first goal for the season.

The award gets its name from player Bob Hampson who kicked the first goal for St Bernards OC FC in the season 1963 the first scored by any St Bernards OC FC player.

Perhaps appropriately this award went to first game player Chris Spinella who snapped truly against Old Camberwell in round one.

Player Sponsorship - Johnny Shelley leads the way

Long time sponsor of our U17s and local racing identity Johnny Shelley has upped the ante by sponsoring three players this season. Johnny selected his two players Chris and Steve Mitchell who went onto star in the senior game and then added young Michael Sullivan to his stable who showed some real promise in the Under 19 game. After a nice earn in Adelaide race 7 when Shadoways saluted at the juicy odds of 33/1 Johnny popped around to Garthy's sunday morning to settle accounts. Many thanks to Johnny who has always been a stalwart sponsor of the boys!

D-Mac Completing High Altitude Training in Peru

Captain and 2007 Best & Fairest winner Damien McLaughlin has just completed a five day Inca trek, hiking 60km at high altitude in Peru. D Mac wore the new Bernards training singlet over the woolies and is now keeping the fitness up with a bit of scuba diving in Columbia before heading back to 'the Pit' next week via London. D Mac says the trek was a lung buster but has helped keep him in shape for a big '08.
