.
abcdRD10: Saved by last minute goal!

Ladder leaders St Bernards, playing at home against Old Carey, were expected to record another victory against the bottom of the ladder team, but no one told them!
After an even first half the visitors kicked away in the third term to have a handy 20 point lead going at the final break. Despite the goal of the year from Lachy McLeod, a fantastic crumbing goal from Bomber Cave and continuous attack on the goals from the home side, Carey were in front with less than 2 minutes remaining. Enter Libba, who recieved a hanball from Schrodes, took off on a run, bounced, kicked-and the home side hit the lead with 40 seconds remaining.
Other good contributors on the day were Joey Indo, Lossa Buckets and Andy Stapo who showed a great return to form following an injury plagued first half of the year.

abcdTwo's win again.
The ressies got away to a good start and led by 22 points at the first break, and slightly less at the main break. The second half saw us gradually creep further ahead to record a 42 point victory.
Simon Chatfield was great all day and finished with 4 majors, one less than Paddy Harris with 5. Jake Foulds played well again and David Blunt continues to show good form after being absent for most of the first half of the season. The highlight of the game came when big Al Mdehwa marked in the goal square with just 30 seconds remaining, and kicked truly to record his first goal in Aussie Rules.

abcdRd 9: Bad day at the Badlands but Bernards retain top spot

After a slow start St Bernards were never able to peg back the leeway against Old Haileybury. The home side opened up with 8 majors to take a 6 goal lead into the first break, and although we were able to peg it back to 4 goals at the end we spent the day playing catch up football.
Ben Jordan again notched up plenty of possies on the ball but the experienced  home side  on ball brigade dominated the match. Ryan Schroder made a welcome return to form, whilst Luke O'Sullivan continued on from where he left off last week. Tom Caven and Mick Moloney battled hard all day and Libba was our major scorer with 3 goals.
Other results meant that we were able to hold on to top spot.

axzc
abcdRessies big winners in early game

In the early game the two's got off to a great start and never looked back, eventually winning by 97 points.
With Kyle Dalmau dominating on the wing the forwards, led by Paddy Harris (5),  Chatty & Andrew Stapo (3 each) had plenty of supply. Jake Foulds was great wherever he played and Meat Axe, back from the ones, put in a typical display of strength. Sasha Bugryn and Daniel Janides completed our list of best players.

abcd19's continue on winning way.

After a tight first half the 19's kicked 6 goals to 2 after the long break to come away with a comfortable 40 point victory at Carey.
Nick Kennedy and David Kavanagh kicked 3 each, whilst Paddy Gamwell and James Molony got 2 each.
Better players were James Molony, Jackson Bell, Rhys Lonergan, Jamie Liddle Brenton Cooper and Damiam Cribbin.

abcdSullies pups  pull off great victory with only 16 players!

Starting the match with just 15 players the young pups managed to keep themselves in the game with the deficit at the final break just 4 points. Now up to 16 players, Sully asked for a special effort and the boys did not let him down.
The final term saw all players put in that something extra which led to the lads recording a sensational 7 point victory.
No multiple goalkickers and the best hard to separate but Nick Fothergill, Matt Sweeney, Ahmed Mahamoud, MarkKelly, Luke Madden and Liam Bevanda got the coaches nod.

abcdClubbies get the points at the pit.

The visitors started with the wind and used it to advantage as they got 5 to our 1 into it. The rest of the game was all the home side, in particular the 3rd term where we held them goalless with the wind. Although SKOB's came back for a short period in the final term the home side kicked back into gear to record a 33 point win.
Blunty dominated play with his experience bringing many players into the action whilst Ben Reardon and Gary Joseph put in their regular honest performances. International rugby 7's player Alan Mdehwa made his debut at Aussie Rules and showed he will be a force for us in time.
Michael Ramsey and James Anderson with 2 each were our multiple goal kickers.

abcd Rd 8: Bernards Storm Home To Take Top Spot and The 'Joc' Trophy!
.
pppppplkoi
.
The stakes were high ... top spot on the ladder and the coveted Justin 'Joc' O'Connor trophy up for grabs. In a high standard game with scores close all day it seemed that Bernards pace might break the game open but St Kevs kept coming and led by two goals 10 mins into the final stanza. But with 20 mins to play Bernards finally clicked into gear slamming on 7 goals and in the end storming away to a memorable victory at 'the Pit'!

Star veteran Ben Jordan and young veteran and acting Captain Chris Liberatore led the way but the kids followed with thunderous pace and passion. Luke O'Sullivan was in vintage form and capped off a great game with an 82 metre torpedo goal that thrilled 'the Pit' faithful. Joey Indomenico, Alex Singleton, Tom Overman,  Ryan Schroder, Steve Mitchell all did well as did Bocca and Clang with 5 majors. Debutant Chris Hoban kicked a goal with his first kick and aquited himself well as did Mick Malone who provided terrific physical presence.

abcd Reserves: Ressies Bounce Back Into Contention
Coach Nick Smith declared it an 8 point game ... win it and we're back in the race ... and the boys deivered in style! Despite falling well behind on the scoreboard early against 2nd place St Kevs our blokes dug deep and after slowly pegging back the margin finally broke clear in the tense final stanza to take the 4 points. James Stapo and Daniel Janides were in everything while Smithy, Jurra and Tim Raff controlled the backline. Great to see Nick weir return to the side and do well. It was one of those games where everyone comtributed at some stage and the win against the odds set up the Seniors to do likewise! Great effort boys!

Pete van Meel had a few in the 1s and a couple missing but still had enough winners to overcome the Manningham Sharks by 51 pts at home on Saturday.

Brenton Cooper led the way with a BOG performance and was well supported by captain Dean Bergin along with
Wil Overman, Damien Cribbin, James Molony and David Kavanagh

Best: Brenton Cooper, Wil Overman, Dean Bergin, Damien Cribbin, James Molony, David Kavanagh

abcd Under 18: Sully's Pups Push Ladder Leaders

The Pups wer a little undermanned as well and faced up to a strong ladder leader Northern Bullants at the Pit Sat morning.

The boys showed some real pluck before going down by 5 straight goals. Coach Damien Sullivan was pleased with the endevour showed all day against strong opposition.

Best: J. Saundry, N. Fothergill, J. White, Sam Jones, T. Sullivan, M. Kelly

Goals: Tom Sullivan 2, Tom Gleeson 2, Michael Pratt

abcd Under 17s: Miracle's Boys Crush St Kilda City!

With 100 inside 50s the margin could have been anything but for inaccurate kicking for goal. In any case the Under 17s continued on their merry way with an emphatic 93 point victory and served notice to the rest of the competition that 'Bernards are going to be hard to toss as the season progresses

Our Best: Nick Shultz, Jack Wheeler, Luke Larson, Isaac Madden, Simon Caven, Keiren Farrell, Thomas Mason, James DeLeur, Jarrod Bye and Michael Turner. Multiple Goalkickers: Larson 4, Jones 2

abcd Young Bernies Shine in Rep Match!

St Bernards players Tom Caven, Lachy McLeod & Tom Overman all aquitted themselves well in the match against the Qld U21 Team at Toorak Park on Saturday.
.
Caven, pitted against one of  Queensland's key forwards kept him quiet, McLeod was a livewire throughout the day and was awarded the 'Spirit of Victoria' trophy as the player voted by coaches to have shown the Big V spirit in his approach to the contest. Tom Overman chipped in with a goal to fire the Vics up after a slow start and had a strong second half.
.
Although the bananabenders proved too strong overall the match was fairly even except the first qtr where the visitors skipped away with kicked four quick goals.

Rd 6: Bernards Def Camberwell - Set Up Top Of The Table Clash at 'the Pit'!
joshmadden
Josh Madden leads the song after St Bernards big win over Old Camberwell
.
Seniors:  In a cold, windy day out at Balwyn and after a frustrating first half where St Bernards could not convert despite dominating general play the boys finally got their balance and bolted away in the second half to a 54 point win.

Joey Indomenico was back to his best form, Chris Liberatore and Tom Overman again had terrific games, Josh Madden lifted in the third and Alex Jolley, Ben Jordan and Simon Cave combined to create opportunities. The win has taken St Bernards to second place on the ladder and set up a top of the table clash with St Kevins at the Pit after next weeks break.

Reserves: Ressies Chalk Up Two in a Row and Back in Contention!

It didn't look pretty but the conditions at the windswept Gordan Barnard Reserve didnt make for attractive footy.

The Ressies took until midway through the third stanza to slip into gear and nail a plucky Camberwell side. Adam Matthews was our best and was well supported by Jesse Manunzio and Andrew Smith.

Big Ben Jones showed some form, Gilly bagged 4 majors and Ryan Schroder led the second half revival.

The boys are now back in contention and can look forward to a big game against ladder leader St Kevs after the break.

Under 19: Bernards Boys Cop First Loss!

Pieter van meel's youngsters ran into a formidable Old Camberwell outfit at 'the Pit' on Saturday and suffered our first loss for the season.

After an even first quarter Old Camberwell shot out to a 7 goal lead at the main break, however the boys did not give up and fought back within striking distance in the third stanza, however, Old Camberwell simply proved too strong on the day running out 51 point winners at the final siren.

Our Best: Matt Soccio, Damien Cribbin, Jamie Liddle, Pat Gamwell, Dean Bergin, Rhys Lonergan

Warriors: Horde Find Students Too Slick!

The hordes have been finding the jump to Division 1 this year is a big leap with one tough game after another and none tougher than the reigning premier Uni Blues.

After a poor start and trailing by 12 goals at the main break the Warriors rallied a little in the second half but could not convert forward thrusts onto the scoreboard. The early damage was severe and the hordes ended up 14 goals down at the siren.

Our Best: Adam Palmer, Tristan McGlade, Dane Evans, David Blunt, Gary Joseph, Justin Fistrovic

Under 18: Pups Struggle at Oakleigh!

Sully's Pups ran into a rampant Oakleigh side at Oakleigh on Saturday and never quite recovered from the initial onslaught before copping a bit of a hiding at Scammel Reserve.

With such a young side form is always going to be mixed so hopefully the pups can bounce back after the break and score a few more wins. The important thing is the boys are getting valuable VAFA experience which will in the long run stand them in good stead as they progress into Under 19 and senior footy.

Our Best: Young Schultzy did well all day, Aaron Helenius was again terrific down back, Michael Kelly, B. Cooper, Michael Kavanagh and our man 'Pigga' Joe Pignataro made another strong contribution.

Under 17:  Miracle Mel's Boys Blast Braeside!

St Bernards 17.21 (123) def Braeside 4.2 (26)

Our game against Braeside was played in perfect conditions at Walter Galt reserve Braeside. The Braeside boys whom were winless really came to play & kicked the first goal of the game within 8 second. They were fierce and put the Bernards boys under heaps of pressure. To our credit we did settle a lot better in the first quarter & led 6 goals to 3

Wil Sullivan whom I have coached previously was outstanding and gathered plenty of possessions Wil who suffered injury after injury last year is hopefully & finally over those niggles which brought his season to a massive halt last year (Well done Wil a super effort) Matthew Sargeant who played on ball & across half back was at his best stopping many forward entries. Sam Jones was super & took 8 great marks down forward when resting from his ruck duties, Andrew Mizzi just keeps on getting bettter & really reads the play well, Kieran Farrell racked up another 33 possessions playing a blinder in the centre, Kieran has plenty of stamina & runs all day.

Luke Larsen who has been getting plenty of it in previous weeks stood tall at centre half forward taking six marks & giving us a target up forward. Isaac Madden had plenty of it & his goal on quarter time was a 40 metre drop punt which left the boot beautifully. Keep concentrating Isaac & have the belief that you are a good kick.

Others to impress were Nick Schultz, Brad Cooper & Thomas Lynch whom all displayed great footy skills with hand & foot.Matthew Turner & Jack Saundry won plenty of the footy whilst rotating from the bench as well

Best: Will Sullivan, Matthew Sargeant, Sam Jones, Andrew Mizzi, Kieran Farrell, Luke, Larsen, Isaac Madden, Nick Schultz, Brad Cooper & Thomas Lynch. Goals: Sam Jones 4, Luke Larsen 2, Luke Sullivan 2, Andrew Mizzi, Sean Whyte, Isaac Madden, James Weir, Simon Caven, Will Sullivan, Jack Saundry & Jake van Meel all 1

As I have said before lets keep that winning feeling going as we have now won 3 on the trot & starting to play great team football. Its not often an opposition coach comes over & congratulates the team for the way we played. This week we play St-Kilda City please be at ground 11-15 for a 12-30 kick off - Mel Beyer

Rd 6: Seniors: St Bernards 21.14 (140) def Uni Blacks 11.9 (75)

Home at 'the Pit', Evo playing his 200th and BJ chalking up his 100th and a 'must win' game (3rd v 4th on the ladder) ... coach Shane Keogh had plenty to light the fuse in his pre match address and light it he did with St Bernards flying out of the blocks to demolish Uni Blacks in the opening stanza.

Blacks fought back well in the 2nd qtr before  Bernards banged on 9.8 to 4.4 in the second half to draw away 62 point winners.

Tom Overman and Alex Jolley were terrific all day, Bocca controlled the rucks and young Alex Singleton kept finding the footy. The milestone boys Evo and BJ inspired the side with their contributions and debutants, Michael Sullivan (4 goals) and Mitchell Church (1 goal) showed their potential. As coach Keogh pointed out at the 3/4 time huddle this was an opportunity for the team to win an important game for two of the clubs favourite sons and the boys delivered!

Reserves: Ressies Bounce Back After Last Weeks Shocker!

With a total of nine changes from last weeks embarrasing performance the Ressies returned to the winners list with a close win over Uni Blacks.

The boys should have sealed the game early but for poor kicking for goal but displayed some character when challenged by the hard running Uni side. The win puts the Ressies back in contention.

Chris Mitchell back from a few weeks off was our best along with Ryan Schroder who took charge when the game was in the balance. Coxy continued his improvement, Salva and Sean Bergin did well and Mick O'Dea who was a little unlucky to miss out on
senior selection with some senior players returning showed he remains in the mix with a strong performance.

Under 19: Bernards Boys Belt Banyule!

Coming off a terrific win over Fitzroy last week there was no easing off by the undefeated 19's as they travelled out to Banyule on Saturday. With spots in this side at a premium players have to continue to perform and Pete van Meel was happy with the pressure the boys applied all day.

Andrew van Meel was best afield and bagged six majors while Daniel Lamana chimed in with three in an othewise even team performance.

Best Players: Andrew van Meel, Matt Trim, Dean Bergin, Tom Gleeson, Chris Hoban, Jamie Liddle

Under 18: Sully's Pups Pinch Another Thriller at 'The Pit'

Down two goals at orange time 'the Pups' found a way home again in a tough encounter with the Therry boys. Sully's boys are young and we are still trying to settle the side with a number of ins and outs each week but they have some grit - after copping a bit of a hiding last week the pups bounced back to get the chocolates!

Dom Monello starred up forward with a match winning six goals. Aaron Helenius was our best player over the four quarters continuously repelling Therry attacks down back.  Others to shine included Jack Aitken, Adrian Corsetti, Michael Kavanagh and James Reid who were all terrific, particularly in the tense last quarter.

Warriors: Hordes Crash At Collegians!

After Mono read the squad out on Thursday night there was a feeling of confidence that the Warriors could chalk up two on the trot but
it wasn't to be ... clearly all that publicity over last Friday nights game at headquarters took it's toll on the hordes ... too many players were looking around for TV cameras while their Collegians opponents slipped away to a 9 goal break at half time.

Owen McIntyre was our best along with, Nick Weir, Gerry Christie, Luke Baird, Tommy Isaacs and Danny O'Neil.

The boys will have to rediscover some form quickly for next weeks clash with reigning Division 1 premiers Uni Blues.

Under 17: St-Bernards 28/29/197 def Oakleigh 02/01/13

As I said last week lets keep that winning feeling going as this week we are now back in the four, a great effort fellas. Sundays game was played in gusty conditions down at the pit and our fist quarter proved that 5 goals 13 behinds showed we had a lot of the footy.

Kieran Farrell was again outstanding with 36 touches a super effort. Matthew Turner also chipped in with 29 possies and played a blinder. Sam Jones & James Weir shared the rucking roll well all day. Sean Whyte chipped in with 5 classy goals plus he hit the post twice. Brad Cooper showed plenty of class with some strong marking around the ground & slotted 4 goals as well.

Our backs led by Simon Caven & Isaac Madden repelled many forward entries. The Barge took a couple of blinders & Will  Sullivan Battled hard all day along with Jack Wheeler & Thomas Mason. Also good to see no players objecting to coming off the ground to give there mates a go, that is great discipline. Many thanks to Adrian Dixon & Jarrod Bye our resident stats guys on the day

Evo To Chalk Up 200th This Saturday At The Pit!
sssssssssssssqw
The boys put together a banner for Evo and BJ for Sat milestone games
.
One of St Bernards favourite sons Justin Evans is set to join a select group of only 26 players in the club's history when he runs out for his 200th VAFA game for the club this week.

A great stalwart of 'the Pit' Evo began his VAFA career in the Under 19s way back in 1997. One of three brothers to play for the club (along with Leigh and Dane) Justin is well recognised as a leader amongst the senior group and has proven to be one of the clubs great clubmen over the journey.

A lawyer by trade Justin manages to balance his busy schedule and stay in good shape which means we can look forward to Evo chalking up the 250 in a few years ... well done Evo!
.
Ben Jordan To play his 100th
.

In a nice coincidence Evo shares his 200th on the same day as another Bernards favourite Benny Jordan racks up his 100 game milestone. BJ has already made a big impact since returning to the club this season.

One of the VAFA and VCFL most decorated players BJ led St Bernards to our last Grand Final victory in 2002 and is now leading the way for the young Bernards group ... well done BJ!

Ascot Vale Leisure Centre Donates Two Gym Bikes to The Kennel!

Many thanks to Ascot Vale Leisure Centre for helping out with their generous donation of two gym bikes to be used in ‘the Kennel’

Alex Jolley organized the bikes with the Centre’s management last week. Jossa is one of a number of players who have worked at AVLC in recent years. We now have 4 bikes in the kennel so injured players can do rehab etc to keep up fitness levels when they are off the track.

D Mac is also looking to procure three heart rate monitors to add to the gym shortly. If you know someone that could help out let D Mac know this week.

Please Help Snaz and Mell - Puppy Lost!
Mel and Steve’s 13 week old golden Labrador puppy named Zali, disappeared from Mary Street, Essendon on Tuesday afternoon around 3pm. She was wearing a purple collar and a name tag with a phone number on it.

Checked all vets and animal homes/hospitals, but no luck.
"We have done a letter box drop and are still waiting for any news.

We believe she has been stolen and the people that picked her up are going to keep her or give her away, we need your help to get the word out to as many people as possible to help us track her down. She could be anywhere now as it has been 2 days"
She is micro-chipped, due for her vaccinations soon, so she is at high risk. We miss her incredibly and would really appreciate your help in finding her. If she is anonymously dropped at a vet, they will find us ‘no questions asked’ We just want her back.

We always thought Dutchy was ok at reading the play but this time he may have been a bit slow … Zoe soon to be ‘Holland’ revealed the SNAG side of the Dutchman on Saturday night following the big win over Old Trinity.

After a romantic harbour cruise in Sin City last week Dutch summoned up the courage to pop the question and after asking Zoe if she was ready to take the plunge … got the affirmative reply … “I was ready four years ago”!

Congrats from all at Bernards to Zoe and Dutchy

Strathmore Community Bank Branch Bendigo Bank are committed to building strong, successful communities. The Bank returns a portion of profits to the local community so far contributing $1 million to local clubs, schools, town fairs, community organisations and festivals.

Chairman Mark Burgin says "We’re keen to increase this amount and that’s where you come in. You see the amount we’re able to give back depends on the amount of banking the community does with Strathmore Community Bank Branch Bendigo Bank.

Of course, we are much like any other bank – with loans, branches, ATMs, credit cards, interest bearing accounts, all the usual stuff. The one blinding difference between us and our competitors is our local insight.

A long time ago we recognised that successful individuals are the living heart of successful communities. So we have built a bank service stocked with products designed for individuals, then placed this resource at the heart of communities across Australia.

We deliver great service and competitive banking products equal to those of our competitors, but with one important difference. We recognise U, as in us, as in community. We invite U to find out more. Call in and compare the difference today"

Cricketers Blast Footballers Off 'the Pit' in Annual Twenty Twenty Match!
It was a hot night but the footballers could have done with more water and less VB! Our boys had them in trouble early but the Bernards cricketers tail wagged long and hard to take out the North Suburban Sports Club trophy.

With Chisel and Tim Raff batting like Gilly and Warner the Snowdogs racked up 219 as Chis smacked a six off the last ball

The target proved 'slightly' beyond the footballers. Clearly we missed the experience of Prez Mick Overman who was ruled out
by first lady Kerry after his last innings produced
a busted eye socket.

Congrats to the cricketers who now lead the annual event 2 /1

Next year Chisel and Raff should be playing with the footballers and we'll square the ledger!

Chris Guice has donated two full sets of jumpers for our Under 19 boys for 2009. A super generous effort from a bloke who has fond memories of his time at 'the pit' Chris traveled down for last years legends game from Qld where he remains actively involved in footy.

We look forward to seeing Chris at this years legends game and the boys flying in their new jumpers!

Bernards Boys on Show at the MCG on AFL Grand Final Day!

2008 was a big year for a couple of our young guns Tom Liberatore and Luke Mitchell. After representing the Big V at the U16 National titles, the boys capped off the season as part of St Bernards Under 16 premiership side with Tom winning the BOG medal.

Since then both boys have represented Calder in the TAC Cup and they played on the MCG in the curtain raiser to the Geelong v Hawthorn AFL Grand Final.

Both boys were key players for Victoria in their win over Western Australia.
Well done to Tommy and Luke!

Last report from his old man Damo is that he's somewhere in Mongolia and already lost his phone but we have just received in some more snaps of Chicka's tour of Bejing ... and looks like he's keeping good company! ... only Chicka! (Right) Chicka at the birds nest!

Bernards Cult Hero 'Yoshi' Takes On The World!

Tsuyoshi Kase better known down at 'the Pit' as ‘Yoshi’ became the first truly international player to win a premiership when he lined up with St Bernards Club XVIII Premiership side that defeated Monash at Elsternwick Park.

‘Yoshi’ has now moved on from the local scene to join his international AFL Team, The Japanese national side known as the ‘Samurais’ competed in the third AFL International Cup. The 'Samurais' lost to NZ in round one before upsetting Somoa in round two with our man Yoshi starring in both games.

Who's that bloke with Evo?

While cruising around the USA Justin 'Vegas' Evans ran into an Indian bloke who looked familiar

Yep, it was the 'Sheik of Spin' Bishan Bedi, the best spinner of all time behind one S. K. Warne.

Bishan rushed straight over to Evo and asked ... "Golly gosh it is you Mr Buckets, how are the mighty Bernards going without your great self up forward?"

Miracles 50th Becomes Big Bernards Birthday Bash!

'Miracle' Mel Beyer celebrated his 50th birthday at the Snakepit in style on Sunday after he coached the U16's to a win earlier in the day. Aside from coaching the 16's Mel is Team Manager of the Reserves and Statistician for the Seniors and of course drives the famous Bernards van with all the gear every Saturday ... what would we do without Mel on the weekends? In a great tribute to Mel's popularity amongst his players twelve of Mel's Captains starting from Luke Rogers (1992) through to Luke Larsen (2008) donned the Bernards colours for the pic below.

From left Will Overman, Kyle Dalmau, Steve Harris, Tim Harvey, Luke Rogers, Adriano Mastropasqua, Mel, Sinclair Johansen, Luke Larsen, Shaun Matthews, Frank Staltaro, Ben Loughlin and James Mount

Trevor Lancaster VAFA's Master Timekeeper

Congrats to Trevor Lancaster who was recently asked to officiate at the VAFA State game. Trev has had his hand on the button at 'the Pit' for years doing both Reserves and Senior games every Saturday.

If you've ever wondered why Bernards quarters seem to go a bit longer its because Trevor is ever the perfectionist adding every milli second of time on something his AFL counterparts could learn from. Its blokes like Trev that make Bernards match days operate so professionally.

Bazz still chugging on nicely

A familiar sight at every St Bernards game is Barry McAntee. Barry is one of a number of characters at 'the Pit' that do more than just turn up at games.
.
Whether its filling the water bottles, jumping in as interchange steward or escorting the umpires Barry does every job with an enthusiastic smile.
.
Each game Bazz arrives early with master timekeeper Trevor Lancaster and reports straight to Garthy to ask “what do you need me to do first boss?”
.
Theres a lot to be done on match days and its blokes like Barry McAntree that make it happen.

Keep up the great work Baz!
