Round 4, its away to Old Carey ...
A glance at Raff's history book shows St Bernards first met Old Carey in 1967. St Bernards commenced in E Section in 1963, while Carey were in C Section but the sides kept missing each other until 1967.
Results from that year were one each and reveal a few familiar names:
10th June: St Bernards 10: 8: 68 lost to Carey 11: 12: 78
Goals: St Bern: Mitchell-4, Taylor-2, G.Amott-1, Crennan-1 Sharkey-1, Coughlan-1 Carey: Green-4, Steele-2, Gamble-2, Hughes-1, Sedman-1, J.Elliot-1
Best players: St Bern: Mitchell, J.Perrett, Tobin, Taylor, Collins, Overman Carey: R.Elliot,Green, Watson, Sedman, Constable, Locke
2 August: St Bern: 16: 7: 103 def Carey 5: 5: 35
Goals: St Bern: Coughlan-4, Considine-4, Sharkey-2, Hancox-2, Amott-1,Reidy-1, Taylor-1, Crennan-1 Carey: R.Elliot-2, Watson-1, locke-1, grean-1
Best St Bern: J.Perrett, Coughlan, Considine, Hancox, Collins, Hanneberry. Best Carey: Watson, R.Elliot, I.Ustick, D’Ambrosio, Hicks, Constable
And yes that’s former Carlton President fat Jack Elliot in the Carey line up
Round 3: Veterans Challenge Cup stays at ‘The Pit’
.
St Bernards 17. 17. 119 defeated Marcellin 9. 10. 64

Captain Damien McLaughlin and coach Simon Madden receive the coveted Veterans Challenge Cup from Vietnam veteran Geoff Underwood. Geoff played over 150 games with St Bernards and was Clubman of the year in 1975.
|
Seniors: The mood in the rooms was determined. Marcellins form was solid and with a few outs this was going to be a test. “We don’t lose at the Pit was the catchcry from supporters“… and we don’t lose the Veterans Cup as Uni Blues, Old Ivanhoe and others before them have found the Bernards boys want that cup to stay in the trophy cabinet.
In difficult blustery conditions the boys stuck to the game plan and with Maddens match ups going to plan Bernards running game and fitness was too much for the Eagles. The 55 point victory leaves Bernards top of the table after round three. Danny Roach starred and was awarded the H and C Lambert medal for BOG (see pic below) Roachy, Alex Jolley, Andrew Stapleton and Tom Overman were clearly our best and Cal Potter booted five goals.
A terrific day all round, many thanks to organisor John Raffle, Johnno Johnson and the Keilor East RSL for their great support and a wonderful Anzac tribute ceremony.

A look of grim determination as the Bernards boys link arms in the Anzac tribute

For all the days pics go to RESULTS page ... round 3
Reserves: On paper the Ressies looked super but even though the boys won comfortably, coaches Rocky Ianello and Shane Keogh were slightly disappointed that we couldn’t get the run and flow going. Lossa O’Sullivan gave us a focal point and chimed in with four majors and along with a few others will benefit from the run. Like the Seniors, the Ressies remain undefeated. Our best Lossa, Tommy Godsell, Gary McIntyre, Jesse Creasey, Bryce Miziewicz and Chris Davis.

|
Viddo’s Warriors: travelled to the outer reaches of town to conquer a solid Box Hill line up by 16 points. Mick Malone racked up another strong performance and won’t be far off promotion. Our best: Mick Malone, John Hellard and Luke van Meel.
The Warrior hordes return to 'the Pit' next Saturday to face the Fitzroy Reds. With only a couple wounded in their last assault we're tipping the hordes to remain unconqured.
|
Under 19 Premier: Matty Mulkearns boys went in with a very young side against a strong St Bedes line up without Capt Daniel Igoe, Danny Forde and Fouldsy all injured. New recruit Johnny from the Kimberlys WA showed he has some real talent. Our best: Steve Forcone, Josh Kassis, Gerry Christie, Luke Sweeney, Alex Singleton and Ben Jones
We don’t like losing but playing this level a little early is great experience … keep at it boys and with a few young guns back in the line up things will turn.
Under 19 (2): Pete van Meels pups are yet to shave or record a win but they battled hard against a bigger opposition and aren’t far away from a win. This scribe tips the pups to cause a boilover next week against St Leos at ‘the Pit’. Our best: Matt Soccio, Tim Peart, Pat Ganwell, Liam Neal, Stephen O''Connell, Justin Monaghan
A Brief History of the Veterans Challenge Cup
| The Returned & Services League through the Keilor East Branch struck a special perpetual trophy in 2003, the Veterans Challenge Cup in honour of those who have 'served the nation' and joined with St Bernards OCFC in celebrating Anzac Day through a special ‘challenge match.'
The match is played on a St Bernards home game closest to Anzac Day. The ‘best player' is awarded the H & C Lambert Medal and receives a replica cup to recognise his performance.
Both Harold and Chris Lambert played with Essendon. Chris missed plenty of football due to War Service, but earned state representation homours. Harold Lambert played 98 games (1940 - 51) including the 1946, 49 and 50 Premiership sides. Chris Lambert played 139 games (1939 – 51) including the 1946, 50 Premiership sides. A staggering six premierships between them. |

Round 2: Bernards blow start but find a win over Bloods
Seniors: Final Scores St Bernards 21.13 (139) d Old Hailybury 21.9 (135)
After a tardy start that allowed Haileybury to skip away to a 34 pt lead St Benards found some run to draw even late in the second quarter and it looked like Bernards pace and fitness would run Haileybury off their feet, but to the Bloods credit and with their better players Brown, Mohammad and Voss firing Hailyebury kicked away again to a 32 pt lead 15 mins into the third.
Again the Bernards boys rallied and closing the gap to 5 pts at the last change we looked set to swoop but Hailyebury would not yield and it was only at the 26 min mark that the game was won after Cal Potter slotted his fourth. Steve ‘Bocca’ Mitchell was again Bernards best along with Danny Roach, young Nic Cattapan did well in his debut game slotting three valuable goals and Nick ‘Junior’ Smith did a great job on the rampant Tony Brown in the second half. |
|
 |

Pottsy bagged four goals after his seven in round 1 |
|
Coach Simon Madden was pleased to get the four points but felt the side could improve substantially. We still have a few to come back and a number of players today drifted in and out of the game but will improve on the run”
Funny moment at the huddle: Chairman of Selectors John Potter complained to Football Director Paul Garth that a bloke taking notes on our players was obviously a spy from Marcellin. When the alleged spy came over to the huddle at three qtr time Pottsy pointed him out to Garthy who immediately stormed over and politely told the bloke to “…. off” only to find out he was actually the VAFA scribe Tahl Lerner who was reporting on the game. A bewildered Tahl pointed to his picture in the VAFA footy record as evidence of his innocence after which an apologetic Garthy allowed Tahl to stay and listen to coach Madden’s address. |
Ressies: Like the seniors, the Ressies could not get their run going against an obviously less fit but determined Hailybury side. After blowing some easy goals early it was even stevens all day and with only a 15 point lead at the last change the boys needed to lift … and they did kicking into gear in the last 15 mins and slamming on 8 goals to storm home by 60 pts. Our best, Ben Hogan, Sean Bergin, Jesse Manunzio, Kyle Dalmau, Steve Ianazzo, Chris Davis
| Second funny momment of the day: The usually reliable Andrew Smith drops a sitter in the last stanza but had a most unusual excuse ... as the ball come in Smithy was interfered with, not by his 110kg opponent but by an insect, yep stung by a bee! Sporting the red welt Sunday morning the lightly tanned Smithy says he will be ok for next week but wearing the aeroguard! |
 |

|
Warriors: Another legion of blokes put their hand up for selection Thursday night with those training getting the nod and the list was trimmed down to 26 for the clash with a handy Monash Blues outfit at ‘the Pit’. With enough on the bench for Viddo and Vass to have a decent BBQ the rotations kept coming ... in a cliffhanger a draw! the Warrior hordes remain unconqurered but had to settle for two points when the bell rang just before we were about to snatch all the spoils. Our best, Jake Spinella, Mick Moloney, Chris Gray, Matt Marion, Gary Joseph, Andrew Brebner
|
Pick me! Viddo and Vass had big numbers available for the Warriors on Sat before settling on the final 26 that fought out a draw with Monash
|
Under 19 Premier: After staying in touch up to three qtr time injuries to Danny Forde and Jake Foulds opened the gate for our opponent St Kevins who blew the young Bernards away in the last qtr to win by comfortably. Our best Matt Briganti, Andrew van Meel, Alex Singleton, Josh Kassis, Jake Bevanda, Stephen Forcone
Under 19 (2): The boys tried hard and were in touch at orange time but were no match in the last qtr for the solid Rupo line up going down by 29 pts. Our best, Chris Tandy, Pat Ganwell, Nick Hughes, J. Cribbin, Liam Neal, David Kavanagh

Perhaps appropriatly this award went to first game player Chris Spinella |
Round 1: Slick, Quick Bernards belt Camberwell at ‘the Pit'
After a strong pre season the young Bernards side faced an Old Camberwell line up that boasted some big names with ex AFL stars, Kent Kingsley, Rory Hilton, Rayden Tallis, Marcus Baldwin and the giant Loats. After wasting some early opportunities the boys fitness and speed overpowered the opposition to record an emphatic 89 point win...click here for more detail.

Player Sponsorship - Johnny Shelley leads the way
Long time sponsor of our U17s and local racing identity Johnny Shelley has upped the ante by sponsoring three players this season. Johnny selected his two players Chris and Steve Mitchell who went onto star in the senior game and then added young Michael Sullivan to his stable who showed some real promise in the Under 19 game. After a nice earn in Adelaide race 7 when Shadoways saluted at the juicy odds of 33 -1 Johnny popped around to Garthy's sunday morning to settle accounts. Many thanks to Johnny who has always been a stalwart sponsor of the boys!

D-Mac Completing High Altitude Training in Peru
Captain and 2007 Best & Fairest winner Damien McLaughlin has just completed a five day Inca trek, hiking 60km at high altitude in Peru. D Mac wore the new Bernards training singlet over the woolies and is now keeping the fitness up with a bit of scuba diving in Columbia before heading back to 'the Pit' next week via London. D Mac says the trek was a lung buster but has helped keep him in shape for a big '08.

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the sudden passing of Paul Holland, father of current senior player Paul ‘Dutchy' Holland. Paul was a well known and much loved member of the St Bernards community.

Rumour swept Anglesea on day 1 that the camp's long standing 'high rope climbing' record of 38 sec held by an SAS recruit would be beaten. Garthy proved an astute bookmaker when he set a board with Yoshi odds on at $1.10, George and Josh at $2.50 and $5.00 the rest of the field. As Yoshi stepped up to the pole a roar of support pushed him up the tortuous climb like a rat up a drainpipe and the second best Japanese player on the planet smashed the camp record clocking 37.1 sec! ... more photos tomorrow |
