The 16As
ventured
once again to Altona chockfull of confidence after thrashing the
Vikings in Round 1. It didn't take long for that to change, Altona
kicked the first goal and seemed heaps more desperate than our boys.
The boys (and parents) got a spray at qtr time. We played better in the
second qtr but the first half was a real struggle and we went in 1pt in
front both teams had only kicked 2 gls. More finger pointing from the
coaching staff really revved the boys up. They came out in the 3rd qtr
all guns blazing, Harry set the forward line alight with 2 quick goals
and we had 3 up in the first five minutes. Stapo moved into the ruck in
the second half and together with Wheels dominated the second half. Our
endeavour was fantastic and our hard ball gets tripled. 6 goals to 1 in
the 3rd qtr virtually ended the contest. In the last qtr both teams
fought hard, to Altona's credit they never gave in. Besides Stapo &
Wheels others to show out were Kizza, Sulla, Gross & Schultzie.
Next week we have the undefeated Werribee at home which will tell us
where we're at.

A win is a
win but
don’t get too carried away as the opposition were very under manned.
Some good signs came out of the game, with Charlie Connelly showing
good football sense by being in the right place to snag his 4 goals.
Should have kicked
8. Most
players
are now trying or at least trying to kick on their non preferred side
whilst under pressure. Zaran Smith goes about it naturally now, as does
Andrew Graham. I am sure all the rest will just do it now.
This week
against
Werribee we need to really produce a high quality brand of football to
win the game and prepare for a
few tough
games in
the latter half of the season.

Entering
into this
game we did expect to play against a fast and talented opposition and
although we did close the gap between this and our round 1 game earlier
this year some more improvement is possible. We have improved vastly in
our skills, but this wasn't enough for the speed of the Altona side. We
spoke at length following the game about what is required to lift our
performances. We have discussed our goals for the season, which will
demand more hard work, dedication and commitment to training and match
days. We will have another opportunity to play our best footy this week
against Werribee at home.

Excellent
team
effort. I believe every boy for St. Bernards gave 110 percent!! We
played the bottom team and we showed that good teams don't loose two in
a row, after going down to North Footsrcay last week. Patrick C and
Robbie E kicked their first WRFL goals ever. These boys were excited,
especially Patty!! Great team win boys! NEXT WEEK WON'T BE AS EASY, DON'T TAKE
ANY TEAMS LIGHTLY!!

It is bloody
hard
playing A grade footy, especially when we are losing many more than we
win. We learnt last year in U11 A, that you measure the team's
performance by improvement and not by wins. Still, it is bloody hard on
the kids to keep fronting up and losing. But what a great bunch of
young fellas they are. If we measured our season on enjoying ourselves
and getting better each week, then we would be on top of that ladder.
Altona
Juniors
were undefeated after 7 rounds and we faced them again at their ground.
In round 1 the scores were 13.13.91 to 1.6.12. At the last break today
we were only 8 points down. Sure they got the better of us in the final
term, but again our boys played brave footy. The Altona manager
commented on our improvement.
Our players
are
running hard (Edyn Sibbald, Jayden Ristevski) making position (
Michael Sauro, Jack Rennex) looking for each other (Josh Wallis, Marcus
Deleur) taking knocks and getting straight up ( Max Jaggard, Will
Isaacs) confidently going for marks ( Lucas Adorno, Michael Caven, Sam
Santoro), bumping and tackling ( Lachie Sullivan, Ethan Baker),
smothering ( Chris O'Bree), holding position (Marcus Disipio, Matt
Falvey),minding our men, trying to win the hard ball ( Chris Tormey)
running straight (Fergal Utri), being creative (Tom Lewis) helping our
mates( Dominic Iermano), and simply improving each week.
To the boys
who
put on a great display today, and to all of the boys who have played
this season, thank you. All of your parents and families are proud of
you and love watching you play footy. Thanks too to Coach Damo who has
overseen the development and massive improvement in each one of the
lads. Now they just need to believe that they can win............ and
then they will.

Caroline Springs 23.17.155

We journeyed
to
the Western Plains to play Caroline Springs and we came up against a
very good side. Caroline Springs signaled their intentions early
with a goal in the first minute. Our defence was under siege and
they did a reasonable job given the supply of footy coming to the
Caroline Springs forwards. The opposition were running and
kicking the ball to position well and we were chasing tails.
It needs to
be
said that the opposition were physically much bigger and played some
great footy. The challenge for our boys was how they handled
themselves against this kind of side when they were clearly
outgunned. The boys did well. Both our goals came in the
second half, which was credit to the boys’ persistence. They
continued to run, tackle, win the footy and increasingly take the
physical contest up to the opposition. In short, they showed a
lot of ticker.
Some of our
bigger
boys are realizing they need to ‘play big’ and start using their bodies
more when the ball is being contested. Some of our new boys
continued to show their increasing confidence by getting involved and
competing for the ball. Some of our experienced boys continue to
show the way with their efforts and lead by example. And there
were some great examples.
In the end
we
learnt a lot from the best side we’ve encountered so far. Our
endeavour was great, and as the boys continue to train hard, develop
their skills and keep playing team footy and supporting each other we
will continue to improve. Go Bernards!

Nine goal
scorers
five players with multiple goals, it shows how much of the football our
boys got their hands on.
It was
another
great team effort again against a taller side, we stuck to our game
plan and did the “1 per centers” and reaped the rewards. A few player’s
egos were dented during the game by the hard hitting opposition,
especially by one of their players which was a female….yes a female! I
won’t mention the player’s names to further rub salt into the wound, it
was much talked about after the game by the boys which they saw the
humor side. Remember every team is hard regardless who we play!
It is
important
that we continue to improve our football, the drills we run at training
are not just about improving our skills but also provide small
simulations of game day situations. If you do it right at training then
you’ll do it right during the game.
It was great
to
see Jordan Spinzolla, Luke Conway Wood and Luke Attard kick goals.
Highlights:
far too many to mention, it was a team discipline-everyone concentrated
on the ball for the full four quarters.
Our biggest
challenge starts next week against Hoppers Crossing,
Reminder:
Early
start next week 8.40am at Hoppers Crossing (away game)
Captains:
Jack
Stephens and Liam Grech – great captain’s game. Well done.

2-1-13
Goals: Henry
J 4,
Lachlan M 4, Marcus B 2, Charles B 1, Ryan S 1, Jordan M 1
Sunday was a
beautiful morning for football, with overnight temperatures dropping in
Melbourne the St Bernard's boys travelled to sunny Altona to turn up
the heat on the opposition. Once again we jumped out of the blocks in
the first quarter, Aidan B, Ash U, Luke B, and Ryan S, sent the ball
forward from the middle with some accurate passing and kicks into
space, this allowed Henry J to swoop for 2 great goals for the quarter,
Marcus B kicked a couple of beauties and Lachy M put one through.
The second
quarter
we swapped our forwards with the backs, the team had plenty of chances
to score yet could only manage the single goal, this was caused
primarily by a lot of players focusing on the goal square and perhaps
not their positions? Players need to remember to hold their positions.
The third
quarter
saw us open up the play and create space for our forward line,
Lachy M had a brilliant quarter with very accurate kicking a terrific 3
goals for the quarter. Jordan M after a week off for a self imposed
punishment showed tremendous reading of the play and versatility when
either forward or back, he also kicked a nice goal. Charles B is
another who fits that mould, his run from defence or strong marking
when up forward were a highlight. Jack M's run out of defence and pass
to set up a goal that we carried from defence to attack without the
ball hitting the ground shows that our skills have come along way since
round 1.
The last
quarter
the team continued to drive the ball forward peppering the goals for
another top result, great to see the effort put in by the team, the
improvement, and the brand of football we are playing is great with
plenty of hard running, strong tackling and Sheppard's, accurate
passing by hand and foot, and plenty of positive talk.
Well done
team
let's enjoy the pie night on Friday.
Next week we
take
on Werribee at home so we will have to be on our game.
U9 Red St Bernards vs Altona
On a
dewy
morning the boys started off really well with two quick goals by Kyle
and Mitchell. Altona stepped up and their bigger boys started to have
an impact. For whatever reason we did not man up or hold our positions,
which resulted in Altona having an open chance at goal on many
occasions. For the first time we were rattled. If it wasn't for Ben
Huggards gutsy effort in everything from tackling, diving in under
packs and clearing the ball we may have been beaten by more. It’s a
team game boys so we need to work as a team, listen to instructions on
the ground and at the quarter breaks. We are going to start making more
frequent changes on the bench to try and get the boys to hold their
positions. Well done to Ryan for going in and getting that ball.

U9 White St Bernard’s 3.2.20 def Point Cook
3.0.18.
Captain:
Joshua.
Goals:
Marcus 3.
Best:
Marcus, Ryan, Nick D, Myles, Joshua, Anthony, Nick V & Jordan.
The boys got
off
to a blistering start led by captain of the day, Joshua. Ryan
started in the centre and was in everything early assisted by Lachlan S
and Nick D. We caught Point Cook napping and with Marcus up
forward we got a couple of early goals. Stephen and Lachlan G up
forward also proved too much for the opposition. Nick V
must have run 10 k's in the first quarter and a 100 k's for the whole
game, good running. It didn't take Point Cook too long to work
out that the Bernards Boys were here to play and the second quarter was
an old-fashioned arm wrestle. The backline of Darcy, Bradley, Connor,
Lewis and Oliver proved that by working hard you can stop the ball and
push it out quick to the wings, where Nathan and Anthony were ready to
pounce pushing the ball forward and again another goal. Fabian and
James were strong across the centre with great tackling. Myles
was his brilliant self leading out and marking strong.
The
third
quarter caught us napping and Point Cook came back at us like a steam
train. We tricked them by playing Grant instead of Stephen and
assisted by Anthony and
Lachlan S were able run the ball out of the backline. With Liam
and Daniel on the wing we were able to stop and hold the ball from re
entering Point Cooks forward line, well done boys. The 4th
quarter was possibly the toughest quarter we have played all year and
the pressure was again on the backline. Well done Daniel and
Dominic who held it together in the backline and Jordan out on the
wing. DISCIPLINE is essential in football and we showed it
today. When there was unsportsmanlike like behaviour from the
opposition it was pleasing to see our boys kept it together and worked
as a team. Well done boys you won both on and off the ground with
your enthusiasm and good sportsmanship. Thanks to all the parents
who helped out and also to Viddo and Nick H who work tirelessly behind
the scenes to keep this ever improving team on the ground.
Enjoy your footy.
