St Bernards
After last weeks
crushing win against the undefeated Spotswood we were brought back to
reality against
a very strong
Williamstown. To the boys credit they did fight the game out well. To
be only 5 points down at half time and in
with a real show,
we let the opposition just take total control of the game in the first
part of the 3rd quarter. Thomas Mason played his best game for the year
& Michael Hughes showed true grit by running all day. Jarrod Bye
also played a blinder down back. Good to see improvement in Mad dog
Smiths game (1%ters) Jake Van Meel also contributed well along with
Alex Horton &James Weir.
This week lets
re-group on Thursday night and have a real crack against Hoppers
Crossing & cement our spot in the top 4.
Be at Hoppers by
1-15 for 2-05 kick-off.

St Bernard’s 10.11.71 def Flemington 6.4.40
Our first and
second quarters were a solid battle against a talented Flemington
outfit that tested us in every contest. We went into the half time
break with a 1 goal lead. It was during the second half that we built
up a strong lead, based on everyone focusing on their tasks and the
desire to play for each other that was difference between the two
teams. Every St Bernard’s player was disciplined and prepared to do all
the team things (no matter how small) required over four quarters.
Every St Bernard’s player finished the game off strongly for a well
deserved win.
It is great to
secure another win as we all have been working extremely hard at both
training and on match days, 2 wins in a row is our reward.
Our game style and
structure is continuing to develop and we are playing some good
consistent A grade football. Well done guys, a great game and a
well deserved win. We look forward to continuing working hard and
prepare for our round 7 game this week. A great team effort by all
players!!!!

A great team win
yesterday on Mothers Day for all of our Mum's who were there to watch.
We were up against
tough opposition all day and the scores were very close up until half
time, but to the credit of our team we came out with a good attitude
after the main break and put a great third quarter on the field which
was reflected on the score board. Our back line really stuck together
as a tight defence team and the mid field gave our forwards plenty of
inside 50m opportunities. We also started to put pressure on the
opposition ball carriers with our great tackling skills and ball
movement. There were so many good individual team efforts, that
everybody contributed on the day, and that is all that any Coach could
ask for. Coaching is easy when you have a team that plays to their
strengths.
Its harder to stay
on top of the ladder, then to get there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

St Bernards 2.5.17 lost to Williamstown Jrs. 12.9.81
Best: Wallis, Utri, Deleur, Gilmore, Tormey, Rennex, Caven, Isaacs,
Sibbald, Sullivan, Steel
Goals: Sauro (2)
It is difficult for the boys to understand that they played
better football this week than they have in the past two weeks when we
have won. Today we were up against a very good team. In U11’s
Williamstown flogged us each time we played. Today the score at
halftime was 3 goals to 1. The boys did everything that Coach Damo
asked of them and we shocked our opponents. We tired after halftime on
the big ground, especially because we only had one on the bench.
Now I know
that you are immediately thinking that L I has struck us savagely once
more. Yes, poor old Ciaran Ross is yet to play a game due to L T L I.
Marcus Disipio had a recurrence of his leg injury (R L I). Coach Damo
has promised that the findings of the Great L I Inquiry of ’08 will be
released shortly. Today however we were decimated by M D F. (Mother’s
Day Functions)
As we have said in past weeks it is terrific to watch the improvement
in the group. Some of the boys who were, as Jack Dyer would say, good
ordinary footballers, have come on in leaps and bounds. Others who were
already good footballers have improved further. Josh Wallis is a good
example of this. His game on Sunday was outstanding. He was always one
of our most creative players and now he is winning more of the hard
ball. Fergal Utri is another who was always a solid backman, but today
was unpassable and he attacked when he got the ball. Marcus Deleur
always plays fantastic footy for us. Coach Damo chose wisely in
appointing him captain. Jack Gilmore seems to never run out of puff.
His running and creativity all over the ground is an inspiration.
Our back
line was under pressure all day. They were well led by Chris Tormey,
Michael Caven and Lukas Steel. These boys where prepared to back their
judgement to win possession. One mark that Michael Caven took against
the full forward was an absolute screamer. Jack Rennex is enjoying
playing on the forward line and both he and Edyn Sibbald played great
games. Lachie Sullivan, rover and Will Isaacs, ruck both tried their
guts out as usual.
Remember
boys and parents, it is not it score that matters but whether we do our
best, continue to improve and enjoy ourselves.
U12 B
The boy’s opened
the game with a terrific first quarter of running football and were in
front at the quarter time break. Somehow after the quarter time break
the boy’s forgot about some of the basic things we practice and we
continually encourage them to do ,like shepherding, and talking when
around the contest. We also have to be more disciplined by playing in
our positions and being in front of our man. The boy’s are encouraged
to deliver the ball and run to the next contest to receive or support
your team mates , if you don’t receive the footy you recover to resume
your position. To the boy’s credit they keep contesting to the end, as
the opposition were physically bigger and a very good footy team .We
welcomed Ben R back from his holiday and welcomed a new player to the
group Jake Campana and his family.

This week the boys
trained at the Lexus Centre by invitation of Collingwood Captain Scott
Burns. Scott took the boys on a tour at the Lexus Center, training,
showed them video highlights, talked about a number of plays, but what
we focused about and worked on was our “1 per centers” (tackle, chase,
spoil, shepherd’s - second efforts) which we took it into our game
against the opposition and what a difference it made, especially from
our smaller brigade. A special mention needs to go to a number of these
players, James Kenny, Bailey Packham, Daniel Vella, Thomas Grech, Jack
Stephens, Luke Attard and Daniel Morabito, these boys did the “1 per
centers” (second efforts) and contributed enormously towards our win
today. Well done boys keep up the good work!
We tried out a
number of players in the centre of the ground and as expected did not
let the team down, well done Matthew Bell, Hugh McLaughlin, Liam Grech,
our wingers also contributed to the “1 per centers” Michael Smith, Jack
Stephens, Alex Tsambardas (his second game and improving).
Going into the
last quarter, the boys continued to work hard and our end result was 10
out of 10!
Captains: Ben
McNamara & Tom Noonan
Next week is a
challenge for our boys against Altona Juniors, let’s continue to do the
“1 per centers”.
Remember what
Scott Burns said, every team is hard!

St Bernard's 4-4-28 def Williamstown 2-11-23
Goals: Lachlan M 2, Henry J 1, Jordan Mc 1
The Under 10 Red's ran into a very determined Williamstown team
this week, yet were able to keep our winning run in tact. The
Williamstown boys opened up very impressively in the first 5 minutes
and put considerable pressure on our defence which to the lad's credit
held out there opposition well, Jyle F was a rock in defence as was
Lachy B, and after soaking up quite a bit of pressure the boys started
to run, kick the ball out into space and this started to pay dividends.
Henry J was everywhere, an exciting player and his work rate is
phenomenal, Jordy F once again got a lot of hard ball gets and some may
say was hard done with a few umpire decisions, Lachy M dominated up
forward especially in the first quarter with 2 fine goals.
The second half
was a bit of an arm wrestle with no goals scored by either team, yet
there was some fantastic and desperate play form the Bernard's boys and
the parents there witnessed a really hard fought match.
The team continues
to develop, and there is a lot to like about Jordan Mc he has great
balance and poise kicked a much needed goal in the second
quarter, Charles B is doing the tuff work in a number of roles and his
versatility is great for the team, Luke H is another who get's his head
over the ball and works really hard to get us going forward, The G
Train James B, is a real impact player breaks packs and creates space
for our running brigade. Nicky D, Tom L run and carry the ball very
well, Marcus B, Nathan B, are all starting to get more footy and are
using the ball really well. James W shows heaps of enthusiasm and
contested and tackled hard all day.
Next week boys
let's work on the first option keep up the good work-there is a lot to
like about this team.
Once again from a
coaching prospective we need to be already to go 20 minutes before the
first bounce, as it's quite difficult to have 18 boys at 8.45 then 24
at first bounce 8.50. Also with a squad of 31 players I know it can be
frustrating to be interchanged or rotated and there is room for
flexibility. We as the coaching staff who give 2 hours of our time on
Friday's and Sunday's DO NOT need negativity re players who have been
on or off, as a coach you have roughly 3 minutes to make changes at
breaks, and we are trying to accommodate each player.
U9 Red
Being
mother’s day, the boys were under strict instructions to hold their
positions to clear the ball from the packs and kick the ball long, it
worked a treat!
Every single boy
had a pearler, from the tackling, shepherding, smothering, chasing,
running in numbers, handballing and run-on play.
Some real guts
were shown also- Luke Creightion kept playing with a near broken ankle,
Patty Willach heavily corked thigh.
The little blokes
were in under the packs again- Domenic Mete, Matty D, Mitch Runting,
Hunter Thorpe, Joey Agresta, Ryan Comitto and Will Biffin were showing
good improvement in their confidence.
Kyle Schroder
kicked two great goals and Matty Sauro kicked a beauty.
Thomas Dervan held
his position well.
The (GENERAL) Will
Riley with Ben Huggard created the wall in defence and made it work
beautifully.
Things must be
going well- the opposition coach said he had heard about this side from
Spotswood. Apparently we gave them a toweling.
A special Mother’s
Day mention to Grace Diamandis (Mother of Matthew captain for the
day) for being such a good tosser!! Of the coin.

Great team
effort in front of a home crowd on Mother's Day. It was good to
see the 'swarm' of players chasing the ball has all but gone from our
game. In its place boys are staying in position and when the
quick kick comes out we have boys ready to pounce. Great tackling
from James, Oliver, Nick D, Myles and Daniel. The kicking and
strong marking from Anthony, Marcus, Dominic, and Joshua shows that if
you try hard at training you get the rewards on game day. Lewis
and Fabian tried hard all day with plenty of running and keeping the
ball in front of them at all times, and most importantly getting both
hands on the footy. The 'Newton Twins' Stephen and Grant were
strong when playing forward along with Liam. The 4th quarter was
possibly our best quarter of footy all year with Lachlan S, Joshua and
Nick V keeping the ball forward giving us more opportunity to
score. Jordan, Connor and Ryan ran all day getting plenty of the
footy. Well done to Darcy for his 'David and Goliath effort
against a much bigger opponent. Well done boys, I'm sure every
mum went home proud of her sons’ effort. Once again thanks to the
many parents who helped out with this weeks game, with special mention
to Luke Gollant for umpiring. Training this week will be back to
basics with no fancy stuff from certain Essendon footballers.
