Under 16D

St Bernards 11.16.82 def Werribee Juniors 7.10.52

Goals: Andrew Graham 3, Liam Jilla 7 Zaron Smith 2 each, Adrian Dixon,Michael Hughes, Patrick O’Connell, Liam Utri 1 each.

Best: Andrew Graham, Luke Larsen, Liam Jilla, Jarrod Bye, Liam Utri, Michael Hughes.

A more competitive game was played at the pit on Sunday against Werribee in fine conditions.
Andrew Graham played a stirling game in the centre along with Luke Larsen in the ruck. Liam Jilla with his silky skills also contributed well. During the game our kicking let us down, so some more practice is required. We should not miss set shots from 20 meters out. We should not kick into the man on the mark in the goal square (Mr Utri)
Overall we did enough to hold off Werribee in the final stages of the game as they were having a real crack.
Next Sunday be at ground at 1pm so we can have proper game preparation- don’t be late or you will be benched

St Bernards 3.3.21 vs. Werribee 13.13.91

Goals: Taylor Bisognano 1, Tony Plazanic 1, Nicholas Quinn 1.

Best players: Conor Ross, Max Paoli, James Riley, Connor Morgan, Jack Holland, Sam Payne, Alex Turner and Nicholas Madden.

Our second round match was a big improvement from last week. We began to play better as a team as the intensity levels increased during the game. We need to tighten up in defence and put maximum pressure on our man, concentration is required from our forward line and mid-field preventing opposition rebound and switching! We all tried extremely hard but in the end they were a bigger and stronger unit. During the week we will continue to work hard as a team on improving our ball handling skills, decision making under pressure, fitness and leg speed and consolidate our game style. Our first win is not far away provided we all stick together!!!!! A big thanks to all parents that have helped out during training sessions and on match days, the players appreciate it.

St Bernards V Hoppers Crossing 13/04/08

Well done to all players, it was a great team effort. We probably should be in a higher division but this will take care of itself after Round 3. Excellent effort and good team play. Every player kicked a goal. There is no need to single out best players or goal kickers until we play better sides, all players played well. Thanks to everyone who helped on the day and look forward to our next game. Training 4.30pm Wednesday

ALWAYS RESPECT THE OPPOSITION

St.Bernards  1.1.7 lost to Werribee Juniors 13.12.90

Best: Edyn Sibbald, Max Jaggard, Lachie Sullivan, Michael Caven, Josh Wallis, Jack Rennex

Goal: Josh Wallis

Today our opponents were held to 90 points, when last week they kicked 91. You might not think that is much of an improvement, but the scores do not always tell the true story. Werribee had kicked 5 goals by the 12 minute mark of the first quarter. We held them to 9 by half time and they slotted another 2 very late in the game, when we just ran out of puff. Other than in the first quarter and at the very end, we really held our own and many boys played tough, hard footy.

A spate of injuries shortly before the game reduced us to only one on the bench. Astonishingly, 4 players have succumbed to leg injuries. This has led Coach Damo to demand an enquiry, just like they are having at Essendon.  It was pointed out to him that all 4 injuries happened in totally different circumstances. In a flash he shot back “then broaden the enquiry. ”

Max Jaggard was skipper and he played skillful and courageous footy. He took some heavy knocks, but one bump he landed on a much bigger boy was memorable. Edyn Sibbald was a tower of strength who showed what being really determined is all about. Lachie Sullivan was back to his ferocious best. The umpy gave a free against him because he tackled a Tiger too hard!

Michael Caven had the job at CHB and showed his old dash and confidence. Coach Damo was rapt and put him in the ruck where he continued the good work. Josh Wallis played strong footy, repelling attacks and dashing down the ground. Jack Rennex again got plenty of it. He reads the play very well.  Lukas Steel plays well when he runs straight at it, as he did today.

Will Isaacs and Fergal Utri had a crack all day, both laying plenty of tackles and getting to the bottom of packs. Jack Gilmore went like a little terrier and had many touches. Chris O’Bree played another good game.

This was a much improved effort. We looked quicker and more committed today. Keep trying boys. A grade footy is not easy.

U12 B

St Bernards 1.1-7  def by  Point Cook 18.15 - 123

Round 2 and Point Cook burst our bubble and delivered a very strong “welcome to the U/12’s” message.  The boys came up against a side on Sunday that was a bigger, stronger side who were well prepared and played good footy.
The southerly was blowing straight down the ground and Point Cook had first use of it.  It was apparent early that our on-ball combination had their hands full and the backmen were in for a busy day.  Some stout defence limited the scoring and we went into the second quarter hoping to make use of the wind.  However, Point Cook continued to pour the pressure on and again outscored us.  We were having a good experience in having to play accountable football and how to play against good taller opposition who use the ball well.

Coach Vague invited the players at half time to concentrate on the things that we want to get better at.  Running, shepherding, winning contested balls and feeding it out to players.  In a concession to the wind we played an extra man in defence in the third quarter which stemmed the tide somewhat but still Point Cook outscored us.
The final quarter was testament to the character of the boys.  This team could have gone either way.  Not used to losing and being behind the boys could have gone into their shell or they could continue to compete hard and see what happens.
They continued to work very hard, run hard, support each other and compete all over the ground. Their persistence was rewarded with us managing to kick a goal and held Point Cook to three goals for the quarter.  As coach Vague pointed out after the game “we weren’t beaten, we just didn’t win the game”.
We want every player to think about how they want to improve, practice at home and school and let’s get to training work together and keep getting better.

U12D

St Bernard’s  5.5.35 lost Werribee Juniors 6.10.46

The boys started well in the first quarter against a slight breeze, we had the majority of the play but we didn’t covert our score into goals. The opposition took advantage and loaded up their forward line with their tall players with the breeze. Our game plan was to create space and run with the ball at all times. We played in front and attacked the ball, we dropped a couple of simple marks deep in our forward line which could have been the difference of winning today. In the last quarter we kept on attacking the ball which resulted in a couple of great goals to the opposition nil. We as a team play some exiting football at times, we just need to work on our deposals. The endeavor of all players was tremendous, it is remarkable to see how much the standard of our football has improved from under 10s.

Daniel Morabito, Bailey Packham, Matthew Bell, Liam Grech and James Kenny continue to improve each week and taken their football skills to another level. Well-done boys keep up the good work!

Captains: Joseph Taylor and James Kenny

Goals: Lachlan Perryman 3, Michael Diamandis 2

The Under 10 Red's travelled down the Western Ring road to take on
Werribee Juniors football club, a short history between these 2 teams
reads from last years  Under 9 Reds that we had 2 memorable games with
Werribee with a one point decision going to each team funnily enough the
home side prevailed each time.

With this in mind we knew we would be in for a challenge, the match
lived up to all expectations with Werribee getting the early jump on the
Bernard's boys who were a bit stiff with there best chance to goal in
the first quarter going just as the bell sounded.

The second and third quarters the Bernard's boys started hit their
straps and used their speed to advantage over their bigger opponents  by
kicking the ball into space or over the pack where we were able to set
up many scoring opportunities, with Great leadership and drive from
Aiden B, Luke B, Jordan F, Ryan S, and with Lachlan B holding down
fullback with some terrific goal saving tackles, the boy's began to get
on top.

The last quarter was all one way traffic with the team going on for a
character building come from behind victory, special mention to Dylan G,
Aisling U, Lachlan M, Luke H, Henry J, Charles B, James G and Jordy Mc
who all played really well.

Next week starts our rotation schedule, and another tuff one against
Spotswood

Goals:  Too many to mention.

Best:   The entire team.

The boys trained exceptionally hard on Friday night in anticipation of meeting our Round 2 opponents, Hoppers Crossing.  The boys worked on their hand and foot skills sharpening up on the quick hand ball and quick kick to clear the ball out of packs.  It was pleasing to see an hour before Sundays game all the boys out on oval 1 having a kick and enjoying themselves.  Unfortunately, Hoppers Crossing were a 'No Show', so a 'scratch match' was organised between the boys.  If the boys endeavour to get to the ball was anything to go by then I'm sure Hopper's Crossing were glad they didn't turn up.  The tackling was hard and has improved 100%.  The standout of the 'Scratch Match' was the boys ability to get the quick kick / handball, have a run and a bounce and if the goals were in sight, there was no stopping them having a shot.  Confidence in each other is growing and with the growth in confidence comes an improvement in our skills.  Keep practicing the team song, and please don't skip your homework to learn them. (Thanks Viddo)  Well done boys and thanks to the parents who helped out, a totally enjoyable morning.
Peter Holland
