Weekend Wrap

03 September 2012

One of the key lessons for St Bernards return to Premier footy has been that you can’t get away with three good quarters.

Seniors: Scotch Second Quarter Blitz Seals Game!

Lapses are punished severely and that’s precisely what Scotch hammered home on Saturday. After an even first quarter Scotch booted 9.1 in the second to St Bernards 1.5 and effectively stitched the game. While St Bernards outscored Scotch in the other three quarters Scotch were clearly the better side on the day.

Nic Cooke capped off a strong finish to the year to be clearly our best, Andrew Merrington was our only other clear winner booting 5.6, Alex Singleton bounced back in the second half after being outpointed early with Josh Madden and Tom Caven both doing well.

After Thursday night and pre game tributes Chris ‘Clang’ Mitchell and Luke ‘Lossa’ O’Sullivan were chaired off in their last game The loss left the side on seven wins and in seventh place which, considering the season’s injury count and a few close losses was a highly credible performance and one that can be built upon next season.

So its mad Monday for the senior sides but still plenty of action left for our U19s and U18s who have won their way through to Prelim Finals next week

A season wrap up and article on retirees will be posted shortly.

St Bernards 14.20 (104) defeated by Old Scotch 22.10 (142)

Reserves: Ressies Outgunned!

A very undermanned St Bernards Reserves faced off against an Old Scotch line up that were desperate to hold their 4th place on the ladder. By the end of the game Scotch proved a class above but didn’t do enough to hold 4th spot as Uni Blues massive win over St Bedes allowed them to tip Scotch out of the finals!

Steve Cannatelli played a brilliant Captains game and was well supported by Keiren Farrell and big Shaun Clarke. Nick ‘Junior’ Smith playing in his last game produced his usual workmanlike performance and Matt Sweeney, Jono Rose and Paddy Harris tried hard but it wasn’t enough.

After a good start St Bernards led by 2 points at the first break but it was mostly ‘one-way traffic’ after that as the Ressies simply found Scotch too hot with the final margin of 89 points.

Like the Seniors the Reserves finished 7th and but for our high injury count would no doubt have done better.

St Bernards 6.7 (43) defeated by Old Scotch 19.18 (132)

Goal Kickers: S. Clarke 3, C. Forder, J.Rose, Ben Peart

Best Players: S. Canatelli, K. Farrell , S. Clarke, , M. Sweeney, J. Rose, P. Harris, Nick Jnr Smith

Thirds: Undermanned 3s Find Scotch Too Hot!

The 3s found Scotch way too good on the day. Coach Frank Mono said that he thought Scotch were the most talented side he faced this season and with a number of his players playing Reserves it was always going to be a tough task.

Great to see some U19 boys help fill in on Saturday and they did well with Paddy Comerford booting 3 goals and Jake Notaro and Tim O’Sullivan also fine contributors.

Like the Seniors and Reserves the Thirds also finished 7th and but for our high injury count would no doubt have done better.

St Bernards: 8.1 (49) defeated by Old Scotch 18.21 (129)

Goal Kickers: P. Comerford 3, M. Byrne 2, D. O''Connor , J. Notaro , M. Kavanagh
