Vale Margaret Carey

21 March 2014

The St Bernard's community mourns the passing of College 'Legend' Margaret Carey who passed away earlier this week.

Margaret's connection with the College runs deep having began working part time here in 1964 for College Principal Br Dunstan Collopy doing secretarial duties until becoming full time College secretary in 1966. She continued in this role until 1989 serving under the principalship of Br Frank Chappell, Br Terry Burke, Br Michael Godfrey, Br Brian Bond and Mr Bernard Dobson.

During that quarter of a century of devoted work she was not only a marvellous benefit to the Principals she served, but also to all of the Brothers who lived in the community. In addition she endeared herself to thousands of boys who looked to her for inspiration and guidance.

In 1984 "The Margaret Carey Building" was named in her honour while in 2009 she was made one of the inaugural members of the College's Hall of Fame and elevated to Legend status in 2011 - the College's highest honour.

Margaret will be missed by many in the St Bernard's community but her legacy and name will live on and forever be synonymous with the College she loved so much.

Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of Mrs Margaret Mary Carey will be offered at St Monica's Church, Mt Alexander Rd, Moonee Ponds on TUESDAY (Mar. 25) at 11 a. m. The Funeral will leave at the conclusion of Mass for the Keilor Cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations in lieu to the St Vincent de Paul Society.
