St. Bernard's spirit shines

27 August 2012

St Bernards spirit shone on Saturday as it has all week. Following our devastating loss of young Harry and the massive show of support for the Overman family on Thursday.

It was a very draining week for the entire club, however, on Saturday we registered four important wins. It was wonderful to see Harrys brother Wil run out with Mono’s Thirds team along with a few mates that not only enabled us to field a side but to cause a minor upset by winning the game.

Seniors: Bernards Crush Caulfield!

The short but strong rivalry between St Bernards and Caulfield continued on Saturday as St Bernards crushed ‘the Fielders’ by 66 points. Last years Grand Finalists met for the fifth time in two seasons with St Bernards edging ahead 3-2 but with Caulfield heading back to B Grade it may be a while before the rivalry resumes. Caulfield have had a horror run with injuries being forced to play an amazingly high 52 players at senior level this year and we wish them better luck next season.

St Bernards opened well with Nic Cooke, Andrew van Meel and Alex Singleton winning possessions and Merro and the evergreen Chris “Clang’ Mitchell capping off the good work up forward. A twenty point quarter time lead was extended to 38 points at the main break as St Bernards work rate lifted with some hard two way running into the breeze.

Coach Chris Tankard stressed the importance of taking advantage of the breeze in the third quarter and not allowing Caulfield to get back into the contest. Caulfield came out firing in the first 15 minutes of the third but despite squandering a number of opportunities St Bernards answered the challenge booting 3.4 while strong defence kept Caulfield goalless.

With two quick goals to Reilly, Caulfield had a brief sniff before St Bernards again responded and with 5.4 to 4.3 in the final quarter we chalked up our seventh win for the season. Congratulations to young Hayden Carland who did well in his debut game.

St Bernards 20.14 (134) defeated Caulfield 10.8 (68)

Reserves: Caulfield To Slick For Undermanned Ressies!

A very undermanned St Bernards Reserves side played with spirit but were simply outclassed by Caulfield at ‘the Pit’ on Saturday.

Our injury woes continued with a nasty knock to Paddy Gamwell resulting in a couple of broken ribs and a suspected collapsed lung. Terrible luck for Paddy who was in contention for senior selection this week following his recent form in the 2s. Paddy was sitting up in hospital Saturday night and sounded in good spirits despite some pain and we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Shaun Clarke showed that with a big preseason he could become an important senior player, Keiren Farrel was lively for the four quarters and Andrew Stapleton, Paddy Harris and Paddy Gamwell gave it their all. The boys fought it out outpointing Caulfield in the last quarter with 4.6 to 2.5 but Caulfield’s early dominance was reflected in the 49 point margin.

St Bernards 9.7 (71) defeated by Caulfield 16.14 (110)

Thirds: Mono’s Boys Storm Home Over Caulfield!

It was great to see Wil Overman pull on a jumper to help out Mono’s Thirds along with some mates who have played little footy in 2011 Nick Shultz, Dylan O’Connor, Jarrod Couch, Josh Cunningham, and big Pete Muggavin.

With so many players out across the senior sides Mono was struggling to put together a side on Friday night but these blokes and a few Warriors rallied to the cause and by the first bounce it was a full contingent of 22 that hit the back oval to face off Caulfield.

Caulfield with the breeze, slipped away to an early 13 point lead at the first break but St Bernards fierce attack on the footy worried the Fielders into errors and with Justin Monaghan on fire up forward (5 goals in the first half) St Bernards clawed their way back to a two point margin at three quarter time. With the wind at their backs the boys stormed home with seven goals in the final quarter. Mark Salvadori returning from injury was a clear winner as were Nick Shultz, Matty Trim, Xavier Cox and big Dan McManus in an otherwise terrific team effort.

Mono will look to make it two in a row next week at ‘the Pit’ in our last game for the year against third placed Old Scotch. We’re tipping a huge upset with the ‘wildbunch’ to scare the Cardinals off the park!

Under 19 Premier: Bernards Fire In Finals Prelude!

While the game was not going to alter ladder positions St Bernards were always going to be hard to stop. After an emotional week a strong St Bernards line up travelled to Brindisi Street determined to do well.

A talented fourth placed St Bedes were a little shell shocked from St Bernards opening burst with the breeze which saw the visitors jump to a 28 point lead at the first break but St Bedes fought back to within 17 points at the main break and it was game on.

With Matt Hutchesson (4 goals)  and Dave Wall (3 goals) looking dangerous up forward, Tom Black racking up possessions and Jonathan Goldsworthy, Jake van Mel and Chris Peart all doing well St Bernards edged away in the second half booting 3.7 while holding St Bedes to 1.4 to take the finals prelude game by a convincing 32 points.

The boys will now re-set for next week where the same sides will face off in the 1st Semi Final.
