St. Bernard's back on top

17 August 2015

St Bernard’s jumped out of the box in yesterday’s game against Old Scotch.

St Bernards 16.15.111  defeated Old Scotch 12.16.88

Best: A.Singleton, J.Bennie, A.Merrington, T.Sullivan, M.Hannan, T.Cartledge

Goals: A.Meerington 3, M.Hannan 2, A.Boyse 2, A.Bentick 2, S.Woods, D.Colaco, N.Cooke, G.Zoccali, T.Cartledge, T.Gleeson, A.Singleton

Tom Sullivan led the charge with a great run through the middle of the ground resulting in a Sam Woods’ goal. Tristan Cartledge controlled the ruck duels in the centre giving players like Adam Bentick and Mitch Hannan plenty of opportunities to move the ball quickly into our forward line. Some excellent running and slick use of handball was a feature of the quarter. But even though St Bernard’s looked like they had taken control of the game, we still only ended up with a three goal lead at quarter time. Old Scotch, fighting to avoid relegation, were not about to throw in the towel. Our inability to string four good quarters together is frustrating and missing set shots allowed Scotch to keep in touch. But that said, we did string together some fantastic pieces of play and established a six goal lead at three quarter time. It ended up being a solid win with plenty of plusses and no injuries.

Players to impress were first gamer, Giacomo Zoccali, with some dazzling pace that put plenty of pressure on the opposition in the forward line. He also used the ball well and chimed with a nice snap goal. Andrew Merrington was up and about, marking strongly and kicking three goals. Alex Singleton earned himself a best on, with some classic Singa’ running and delivery. James Bennie played with some great energy and a number of times took on the opposition to run it out of our back line.

It’s good to be sitting back on top of the ladder. We head to De La Salle next week in what should be a cracking match. We’ve got some important milestones to celebrate and wouldn’t it be great to end their run at the finals with a thumping win to St Bernard’s!

Reserves

Old Scotch 14.12.96 defeated St Bernards 11.11.77

Best - Pat Macdonough

Goals - TBA

Once again the ressies, with many young players in the side, matched it with a top 2 side for 3 quarters.  Taking a slender 6-point lead into the last quarter, the boys could not stem the flow as the quality Scotch outfit piled on 6.2.38 to just 2.1.13.

Today's result highlights that we are close to the better quality ressies teams.  We just need to bring a 4-quarter effort this last 2 rounds and challenge ourselves to play the season out; firstly against De La at the Dairy Bell this week.

Thirds - 1st Semi Final

The 3rds were gallant in defeat, overrun late in the 4th quarter by a quality 3rds team, Collegians.

To make the finals for the 2nd year in a row in Premier 3rds, after dramatically restructuring our 3rds team after the 2013 season, is an outstanding result.

Congratulations to all of the coaches, support staff and players for an outstanding season.  We look forward to the 3rds boys continuing to support the 2s for the last 2 rounds of the home and away season and then the senior side in their upcoming finals campaign.
