Alex Singleton and Nick Cooke Retire

17 January 2019

Two of Bernards best call time

Two of Bernards Finest Hang Up The boots

In St Bernards history only twenty-two players have played 150 ‘senior’ games and only twelve on that elite list included an A Grade Premiership. Two of those twelve, Alex Singleton and Nic Cooke have recently announced their retirements.

Both ‘Singa’ and ‘Cooka’ have consistently been amongst the club’s finest performers over the past decade and a huge part of the club’s success. Who can forget the young Cooka kicking a late goal in the 2011 Prelim against St Kevs to seal our return to A Grade or the countless times Singa streamed down the wing to boot a major before giving his famous ‘fist pump’

Cooka will be moving to New York in March to work in the Big Apple’s real estate development market, while the recently married Singa will focus on work and mending his injured shoulder.

All at ‘the Pit’ salute two of the club’s favourite sons .. for the record:

Alex Singleton (226 games) A product of St Bernard’s Junior program Alex progressed through under 19 football before making his senior debut in 2009 where he became a permanent fixture in the senior line up.

Along the way Alex collected VAFA rep honours, was Runner-Up in our senior B&F (2011) won the H&C Lambert Anzac Challenge medal (2012) and of course starred in our 2015 Premiership side.

Alex’s consistency and resilience has been remarkable, missing just six games in ten seasons from 2009 to 2017 and he finished top eight in every senior vote count in that time.

Nic Cooke (161 games)

Another St Bernards Junior, Nic had a stint at Calder Cannons before playing U19 Premier and making his senior debut way back in round 18 of 2009. Since then Nic, like Singa, has been a regular member of the senior side, racking up his 150th ‘senior’ game in the 2018 Grand Final. Nic won VAFA U/19 rep honours in 2011, was Runner-Up Senior B&F in 2012 and along with Singa starred in our senior 2015 Premiership year.

A super competitor who played with passion, Cooka, like Singa has been the most consistent of performers at the highest level in his fine career

Well done to two terrific players, two great clubman and two super blokes. paul garth
