Round 8 Thirds v Old Scotch

09 July 2013

After the wash out weekend of June 1 the thirds got their chance to take on Old Scotch at the Pit.

Round 8 St Bernards thirds vs. Old Scotch 6/7/13

Pre-Match focus was to get back to basics, follow the game plan, beat your direct opponent, win the majority of the contested footy and bring home a badly needed win for this group. Mono and Kev were optimistic of our chances.

Kicking into a stiff breeze we flew out of the blocks kicking three goals through brilliant efforts from McCann, Borzillo and Schultze. The defence led by Cooper, Christie and Sargent stood strong, however the visitors steadied to be 3 points up at the first change. The second term produced our best quarter for the year, an inaccurate 2 goals 7 failed to put score board pressure on the opposition and would ultimately come back to haunt us. The defence was brilliant during this term holding Old Scotch scoreless.

At the half time break Mono and Kev urged the troops to continue the high work rate shown in the first half and restrict the oppositions use of the 3 to 4 goal breeze to set up for a win. Unfortunately the opposition had other ideas and piled on 8 goals to our 1 miserly goal after half time to run out comfortable winners.

The coaching group agreed that this was a very disappointing result for the entire group, we were not necessarily disappointed with the effort shown it is more the acceptance of defeat and our unwillingness to turn this around by hitting the track and increasing our fitness and skill levels to a point that we can produce 4 quarter efforts at this level. Hope is not a strategy to get our next win it will only happen when we work hard together as a group on the track and for 100 minutes during the match.

Mono, Kev and the leadership group are working very hard to make this group more competitive and wish some of the playing group would share their passion. Having poor numbers at training is reflective of our on field performance and it is no coincidence that our best players are the guys who are prepared to put in the hard yards at training and we owe it to them to lift our game.

Thanks to Lawler, Moloney, Helenious and Walsh,( from the Warriors),  Cooper, Sargent, Borzillo and Schultze,( from reserves), for their valuable contribution. We will now turn our attention to next week dust ourselves off, roll up our sleeves and work hard to get that elusive victory.

Final Scores: St Bernards 6-12-48 defeated by Old Scotch 11-10-76

Goals: McCann 2, Borzillo 2 , Sargent and Moloney.

Best: Christie, Cooper, Borzillo, McCann, Schultze, Evans, Bye.
