Round 17 Wrap Up

22 August 2011

Everything was going to script in the first as St Bernards burst out of the blocks and looked far too slick for Ivanhoe.

Great Weekend At Bernies!

Seniors: Bernards Steam Train Rolls Over Hoers and Finals Bound!

Everything was going to script in the first as St Bernards burst out of the blocks and looked far too slick for Ivanhoe. With six goals before the Hoers grabbed a late one St Bernards led by 34 points and the Hoers looked a little bewildered but like the proud club they are Ivanhoe were not about to concede without a fight.

With Baldwin, Harrison and Jessop lifting Nick Butler and Delmonte capped off some good work and in a flash the Hoers managed six goals to Bernards three and were back in the game at half time as the lead narrowed to 16 points. The third was a tough hard affair with neither side giving an inch and it was still 'game on' at the final break as St Bernards led by 14 points.

In a fast, physical game on a sunny day the question was who was the fitter side. St Bernards coach Chris Tankard reminded his charges that they had done the work and if they maintained the tempo Ivanhoe would crack. Ivanhoe came again early in the last but St Bernards were starting to win the contested footy and as Bernards lifted another cog a brave Ivanhoe looked like a boxer struggling to stay on their feet. Three quick goals midway through the term put the Hoers on the canvass and the question of fitness was answered emphatically with St Bernards slamming on 7.2 for the quarter to run out 33 point winners.

Media liaison officer Glen Scarborough summed it up “It was a strong win against a highly committed Ivanhoe line up who were playing for their season but the most impressive thing was St Bernards players hunger for the contest .. our blokes were fierce and quick and the way they stormed home in the last quarter they look like they're on a mission”

The win should ensure St Bernards a finals spot but the old adage of 'a week at a time' applies. Next Saturday St Bernards travel to Caulfield to face off the ladder leaders at the Heath.

Our Best: A. Singleton, T. Gleeson, J. Stapleton, R. Schroder, T. Caven, S. Caven

Reserves: Ressies Celebrate Snaz's 200th and Jesse's 100th In Style!

Like the Seniors, it was a 'must win' game and the Ressies came to play. The boys had extra incentive with Stephen Iannazzo playing his 200th and Jesse Creasey's 100th.

In a high standard game Ivanhoe threw everything at St Bernards as a win would secure the Hoers finals chances but with Dutchy, Tommo and Paddy Gamwell on fire down back St Bernards continually repelled the early onslaught and scores were locked at the first change.

The Second quarter saw St Bernards slowly but surely begin to win the arm wrestle with Snaz getting plenty of the footy and Josh Smith and Clang starting to make a real impact the home side opened up a 15 point lead at half time. St Bernards dominated the third and the lead was stretched to 34 points by the last break and St Bernards ran away from the tiring Hoers in the last to register a 54 point win and retain second spot on the ladder.

The boys face Caulfield (3rd) next Sat in the decider for the double chance

Our Best: N. Thomas, C. Mitchell, M. Sullivan, J. Smith, S. Iannazzo, P. Holland

Thirds: Mono's Boys Close But No Cigar!

The only blip in an otherwise 'great weekend at Bernies' was the Thirds going down to Xavs and as results from the other games filtered through it looks like finals footy is off the menu for Mono's boys as we sit fifth and a game plus percentage adrift of 4th placed Uni Blacks.

St Bernards threw everything it had at Xavs in a brave effort to clinch a finals spot but just fell short after getting close deep into the third quarter Xavs had too many answers running out 23 point winners at the final siren.

Match Details to come

Under 19: It's Not Over Till It's Over!

In a prelude to next weeks second semi final St Bernards (2nd) faced off to ladder leader and undefeated Werribee in a game that wouldn't alter next weeks fixture but would give both coaches some measure of the opposition.

As he has done all season Under 19 coach Damien Sullivan focussed is charges on the fundamentals, hard running and a committed attack on the footy. Half way through the third it looked like W'bee just had too many answers but the St Bernards boys refused to go quietly and kept coming back at their bigger opponents to stay within 10 points at the final break.

The last quarter was a thriller with St Bernards sensing an upset and in the last 10 minutes the boys out ran the Tigers to register 3.6 to W'bees 1.0 to snatch an eight point win.

While it doesn't alter positions the win will give the St Bernards boys some confidence that they can match it with the top side.

Our Best: L. Sullivan, J. Weir, J. Bennie, K. Farrell, B. Cooper, W. Sullivan

Under 18: It's Not Over Till It's Over .. part (2)!

What an effort .. the Pups were gone deep into the third quarter as Werribee looked to have our measure but the St Bernards boys, like the club song says .. 'we never give in' fought back brilliantly and snatched a thrilling draw in the dying minutes of the game.

If spirit counts for anything these kids have a bright future ahead.

Congratulations to Chris Connelly, Jed Whelan and their support staff on a terrific development year for the youngsters. The Pups finished on a high note and a respectable fifth place for 2011. We look forward to seeing the boys supporting their mates in the 19s and Senior sides upcoming finals campaigns.

Our Best: D. Thompson, J. Van Meel, M. Sulzberger, M. Hughes, A. O'Connor, L. Neal
