Seniors: Bernards Struggle In Varsity Bog!

Another wet ground, another ‘must win’ game but unlike the previous two weeks where St Bernards had played well to match Xavs and defeat De La Salle the side struggled in the heavy going and were defeated by a far more determined Uni Blues line up.

St Bernards opened well with two early goals before Uni Blues levelled and then added a third to take a three point lead at the first break. Uni Blues stretched the lead to 15 points half way through the second term, however, St Bernards responded with three late goals to draw within two points at the main break. As the game turned into a mud wrestle it was a case of who took their chances and it was the Blues who handled the conditions much better in the second half.

The third quarter saw Uni Blues take complete control in the midfield with Jack Watts dominating the ruck and Young, Rippon and Mugavin on top the Blues created plenty of forward opportunities to boot 5.1 while holding St Bernards to 0.3

Such were the boggy conditions that the 30 point break was going to be sufficient and despite St Bernards clawing back the margin to 17 points half way through the final term Uni Blues finished better with three late goals to run out comfortable 37 point winners.

Final Score: St Bernards 9.9 (63) Uni Blues 6.17 (53)

Best: N. Cooke, T. Sullivan, M. Angel, S. Caven, T. Caven, A. Bentick

Goals: A. Grosso 2, S. Caven , T. Harvey , J. Solomon , A. Singleton , N. Cooke

Reserves: Ressies Well Beaten By Blues!

The Ressies were simply blown away in the first quarter and despite battling it out in the second half were never a chance against a bigger, stronger and more desperate Uni Blues outfit.

While a number of players struggled to find their feet in the boggy conditions coach Damien Sullivan was disappointed in the application of the side, particularly early and the boys will need to lift starting next Saturday against Beaumaris.

Final Score: St Bernards 3.7 (25) def by Uni Blues 9.6 (60)

Best: Farrell, Saundry, Cal Forder, Hoban, Wil Sullivan, Hawkins

Goals: S.Mitchell, S.Clarke, O.McIntyre

Thirds: Threes Outclassed By Collegians!

St Bernards Thirds were no match for a talented Collegians line up at Harry Trott Reserve on Saturday.

Kevin Jones reports .. After a two week layoff Mono and Kev’s thirds travelled to Harry Trott oval to take on Collegians.  The game brought up Marty Byrne‘s 100 th game for the club, Mono spoke about Marty’s contribution to the club and how guys like him help build successful clubs.

Another poor start paved the way for a frustrating day at the office. Our work rate and intensity lifted in the second quarter and we were able to outscore the opposition to give us a sniff at half time. Unfortunately the effort could not be sustained and a seven goal to nil third term ended the contest. As a team we need to build on our second and final quarter efforts to seriously challenge opposition at this level.

Thanks to Andrew Gurrisi who rucked tirelessly all day and Damien Hurley for providing good leadership down back. The coaching group encourage all players to get down to training and work on their skills and fitness in an attempt to get this group a badly needed win.

Final Score: St Bernards 4.9 (33) def by Collegians 16.13 (109)

Best:Rose, Schultze, Hurley, Isaacs, Ryan, Evans and Gurrisi

Goals: D. Ryan 2, P. Scarpino , L. Neal

Warriors: Hordes Washed Out!

The second placed Warriors were looking forward to consolidating their position at the top end of the table, however, heavy midweek rain caused the closure of the grounds and the game has been postponed.

Under 19 (1): St Bernards In A Thriller Over St Kevs!

4th placed St Bernards faced off against 3rd placed St Kevins in a ‘must win’ game at Walter St.

St Bernards flew out of the blocks to register a handy lead in the conditions with 2.4 to St Kevs 0.1, however St Kevs bounced back hard in the second term to cut the lead to only two points at the main break.

It was a dour affair in the heavy going with goals at a premium. Jack Fraser and Alex Boyse were relishing the conditions and were well supported by Jono Ayers, Keiran O’Connor and Nick Bergin while Matt Peart continued his improved form but in an even tussle neither side could wrestle a clear advantage.

With scores locked at 4.10 apiece deep into the final quarter St Bernards scrambled up the winning goal to take the match and consolidate their position in the top four. Well done to Rocky Iannello and his boys on a terrific effort and a most important win!

Final Score: St Bernards 5.10 (40) def St Kevins 4.10 (34)

St Mary’s to their credit managed to fight back in a thriller and escape an upset booting 3.2 to our 1.2 to clinch the game by two points.
