Poor kicking proves very costly for St. Bernard's

08 September 2015

When the final siren rang out on Sunday many of the St Bernard’s supporters sat in stunned silence and in disbelief that we had lost the game.

St Bernards 5.18.48  defeated by Old Trinity 8.7.55

Best: T.Sullivan, S.Clarke, A.Bentick, C.Jones, T.Caven

Goals: C.Jones 2, T.Gleeson, B.Ronke, A.Singleton

I am sure many Old Trinity supporters were also sitting there stunned thinking, how did we win that one? At three quarter time St Bernard’s led by 32 points and Trinity had only kicked two goals! But the demise of St Bernard’s started in the first quarter, where kicking with a strong wind and dominating much of the play, we could only manage 6 behinds. Post-game it was Anthony Rock’s first point to the players when he said that quite simply if we don’t kick goals when we get the opportunity, we can’t win games.

St Bernard’s played a very good second quarter. Midfielders Adam Bentick and Tom Sullivan continued to win plenty of the ball, as they had in the first quarter. Trinity struggled to get clean possessions and the backs, led by Tom Caven and Chad Jones, repelled many of their attacks. Kicking into the strong wind they kicked the only goal for the day at that end, after a series of well-weighted handballs, set up Ben Ronke straight in front – he didn’t miss.

The third quarter saw St Bernard’s kick 4 goals and keep Trinity scoreless. But we also kicked 9 behinds! The game at this point should have been beyond Trinity’s reach and many spectators believed that to be the case. How wrong they were! Deep into the last quarter it looked like St Bernard’s still had enough points on the scoreboard to win. But in the last ten minutes disaster struck and Trinity hit the lead by a point. We were gone and they kicked another just to really rub it in.

There will be some soul searching this week and feelings of anger, but the fact is we’ve still got a job to do. Let’s take some of that anger into the next two games and put the score on the board to win! Go Bernies!
