Miracle Mel Beyer’s Warriors hit VAFA headquarters on Sunday like a whirlwind and came away with a big first semi final win over De La Salle.

Miracle Mel’s Report

The ‘paid up and proud Warriors’ travelled to Elsternwick Park on Sunday to do battle against De La Salle in the first semi final. The sun was shining and the breeze was blowing (as usual) towards the scoreboard end of the ground.

Kicking with the breeze in the first quarter we managed 3 goals, 5 behinds for the term but were not happy with our return given we had 80% of the play and De La flooded back to decrease our scoring opportunities. Chris Mitchell found the footy well & kicked two ripper goals and Jesse Creasey snuck in another just on siren time. James Stapleton was everywhere during the term, gathering plenty of possessions and providing drive. Our backs also repelled plenty of attacks keeping the opposition scoreless for the term.

As De La took their turn with the breeze the instruction at quarter time was to defend well but back ourselves to run the ball and attack at all times. Chris Mitchell & Jesse Creasy kicked crucial goals to set up a handy 35 point lead before De La bounced back. Some sloppy disposal & wayward decision making gifted De La a couple of easy goals but De La continued to attack slamming on 4 goals 7 for the term. The damage could have been worse but for some terrific efforts from Damien Hurley, Josh Faulkner & David Blunt who were under enormous pressure & did well to stem the flow. With only a five point buffer at the main break, it was anyone’s game.

After a big discussion at half time where all players were involved we came out and kicked the first 4 goals of the quarter, Chris Mitchell, Jesse Creasey & Daniel Janides consolidated our lead. Mick Moloney was thrown into the centre and produced one of his best games for the season. ‘The Bigman’ and Sean Lawler were working well together in the ruck as they have done most of the season and were having a big impact. Matt Gurrisi and James Jovanovski were sharing wing duties & gave us plenty of drive with their pace.

The fourth quarter saw De La Jump out of the blocks kicking 3 goals in the first 4 minutes. With the lead reduced to 14 points the pressure was really on our boys.

Once again the Mitchell factor stepped in to steady the ship kicking another two goals into the breeze. The rest of the quarter was played in typical Warrior conditions (TOUGH HARD SLOG) for both sides. Matthew Trim & Sinclair Johansen stood their ground well with some great contested footy and as the siren sounded we had our noses in front.

The song was sung with plenty of gusto before the boys turned their attention to next week when we take on Prahran Assumption, Sunday, 2pm at Elsternwick Park.

Lets keep the winning feeling going & prepare ourselves for a spot in a Grand Final
