Hordes storm into grand final

20 August 2013

The paid up & proud ‘Hughes O’Dea Corredig’ Warriors travelled to Elsternwick park to take on Prahran-Assumption for a spot in the 2013 clubbies Grand Final.

Having won the toss & kicking with a five goal breeze we didn’t really capitalise during the quarter kicking 2 goals 4 behinds. The breeze was so swirly it was almost impossible to score. Keeping Prahran scoreless for the quarter was a real bonus as they had plenty of forward 50 entries. Once again our backs stood firm led by Damien Hurley, Mick Moloney, Josh Faulkner & Alex Buckley. A long bomb by Jesse Creasey and smart roving by Chris Walsh gave us a bit of a buffer come quarter time.

In the second term players were instructed to play the outer side of Elsternwick park to try & bottle up the game & keep the opposition to a minimal score. In the process of doing that Chris Mitchell chipped in for a goal to draw the lead out to 22 points. Once again our backs were under enormous pressure but they all stood firm again. James Devery in only his second game in 10 weeks was a real surprise packet gathering plenty of possessions & along the way gaining plenty of confidence. Our pinch hitter Marty McVeigh was right in the thick of things during this tight tense quarter. Our six point lead at the main break was a real bonus as Prahran threw all they could at us.

The instruction at half time was to kick it straight down the middle. Enter Chris Mitchell whose cool head & senior experience set the scene with 4 ripping goals to break the game wide open. Mick Moloney was moved into the centre & he showed just what an important p[ayer he is with his bursting energy and Aaron Helenius was providing real momentum with a couple of great centre clearances. Our 32 point lead at the main change was just what the doctor ordered as we felt we had Prahran on there knees if we kept the pressure right on them. Our rucking duo of Sean Lawler & the ‘Big Man’ were also working well again. Matthew Trim was also doing a good Job at centre half forward after Nick Toy came off with a broken nose.

The last quarter saw the side come out & play some really good footy into the breeze, Chris Mitchell, Aaron Helenius and ‘The little man of footy’ all chipped in for goals to stretch the lead out to seven goals. Once again every player who took the field gave 100% as our bench was left bare due to many injuries. Overall a really good performance and now we prepare for what we set out for .. a shot at a Grand Final.

So next Sunday we take on the undefeated Xavier Crocs at 2-30 pm at VAFA Headquarters. Once again, lets keep that winning feeling going as we are really playing some good footy at the right time of the year! Lets all dig a little deeper next week to take home the Flag.
