Bernards FC vs Bombers VFL

20 March 2015

In a first for the club St Bernardsfc played a practise match on thursday night vs Essendon VFL.

The game came about through assistance from Essendon Community Engagement Officer and Bernards player Bernard Shepheard, liasing with Craig Connelly and Terry Bentick on the Bernardsfc Committee.

It was a great opportunity to play elite opposition at Essendons AFL HQ, on the MCG sized no1 oval in Tullamarine. The indoor warmup facility alone could house almost a full sized soccer pitch. Despite a howling wind a very fast paced and intense game unfolded. As expected the VFL team were extremely fit and skillful, however after ten minutes settling in Bernardsfc gave them a very competitive match.

In many stoppages and around the ground it was a tightly and keenly contested game, with both teams hitting the scoreboard regularly. Essendon VFL coaches used the game to practise and fine tune their structures, with a focus on play being spread all round the very large ground.

A feature of the game was the ongoing development and improvement of a number of Bernards players, who have graduated from last years u/19 premiership team up into senior ranks. In his post game summary Coach Anthony Rock said "Once we settled into the fast pace of the game we brought good pressure and focus to the contest. We were able to chase, harass and force many turnovers and at times we moved the ball very well into the forward line. It was a great experience for the players and we take away a lot of positives".

The club would like to thank Bernard Shepheard and the Essendon VFL coach Matt Little and their group for this great opportunity to play at Essendon HQ. We hope to continue to build our relationship with the Bombers, and access their facilities again sometime in the future.

The club now moves on to practise matches on the weekend for all 6 teams, followed by a march 28th hitout vs University Blues. From there its the Easter break, our season launch dinner thursday april 9th and big first round april 11th away at Trinity.

We urge all supporters to "Join us Now" step up and join our membership drive to support our hard working playing and coaching group, who are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to improve. (see separate article re membership). thankyou.
