Bernards bounce back in Uni bog

31 July 2012

Both sides desperately need the 4 points and given the poor state of the Varsity oval it was going to be decided by the team that wanted it the most.

Seniors: Bernards Bounce Back In Uni Bog!

St Bernards wore black arm bands in recognition of former captain and club stalwart Gary McAllister who passed away tragically on Thursday night. From the opening bounce to the final siren every player gave their all and with 17 shots to 8 the final margin of 19 points did not reflect St Bernards dominance throughout the game.

Kicking with the breeze Uni Blues scrambled the only goal in the first quarter while St Bernards missed a couple of relatively easy opportunities but as the rain moved in and conditions deteriorated St Bernards stuck to the task and dominated the second quarter with 4.5 while holding the Blues scoreless to open up what seemed a match winning lead.

If Uni Blues were to challenge it had to be the third quarter but a totally committed St Bernards outfit were not about to let this game slip and after holding the Blues to one goal for the quarter St Bernards set up the game before toughing out the final quarter to register an all important sixth win for the season

All roads lead to Sportscover Arena next Sunday where St Bernards take on St Bedes who defeated Old Scotch.

St Bernards 5.12 (42) defeated Uni Blues 3.5 (23)

Goal Kickers: T. Gleeson 2, L. O''Sullivan , L. Madden , J. Madden

Reserves: Ressies Too Strong For Uni Blues!

Uni Blues kicked the first goal of the game but a super determined St Bernards outfit made sure it was also their last in a strong win at the the Varsity oval.

The win was soured by injuries to Justin Evans who had just come of a blinder in his 250th for the club in the previous week and young Pat McDonough who has been starring in the U19s. Thankfully both may miss some footy but will be ok.

St Bernards took control early and never looked back with Kyle Dalmau booting three majors and Ben Peart relishing the slippery conditions St Bernards stretched the lead to 20 points at the main break. Paddy Gamwell lead the charge in the second half and with Paddy Harris continuing his good form down back and Liam Cookson also doing well the boys kicked away before running out 30 point winners on a day where it was difficult to score.

The win kept St Bernards finals hopes alive and another win next week against St Bedes will ensure we are in contention.

St Bernards 6.9 (45) defeat Uni Blues 1.9 (15)

Goal Kickers: K. Dalmau 3, C. Mitchell 2, M. Salvadori

Thirds: Brave 3’s Pipped By Blues!

It was a bad start in the first minute of the game when Jimmy Moloney who was playing his first game for six weeks was injured. Another injury to Johnny Hellard left the side two down, however, Mono’s boys battled their hearts out in the first three quarters to stay in touch with a strong Uni Blues line up.

As in previous weeks St Bernards were very competitive but didn’t have the numbers to run out the 100 minutes and in the end it was the third placed Varsity that took the game by a comfortable 45 points.

Grant Breheney dominated the rucks again and was well supported by Flanners and Wil Kingston. Young Jack Holland did very well as did Michael Kav and Luke Baird.

The Thirds have a bye next week before fronting up against De La at home the following week
