U19 Premier march into Prelim Final

Peter Wood’s U19 Premier charges travelled to Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham, to face St. Bede’s Mentone in a first semi final.  A dramatic Thursday night training session saw three players injured, resulting in some forced changes from the team that beat St. Bede’s the previous week.  The selection committee took the advice of U19(2) coach, Kevin Jones, and selected Matt McCann to make his U19 Premier debut in today’s first semi final.

Bernard’s won the toss and kicked with the benefit of a 3-4 goal breeze.  St. Bede’s started with strong intensity and many players rotating through the bench were commenting on how “hot” the contests were early.  After 10-15 minutes, Bernard’s settled and with the benefit of am amazing 50m goal from deep on the half forward flank after the quarter time siren by Jake Van Meel, took a slender lead into quarter time.  3.5.23 to 2.5.17.

Woody’s instructions at quarter time were clear.  Run the ball into the breeze, the forwards and on-ballers/wings were to present as leading targets, and the intensity of contested footy needed to go up a notch.  The ensuing 25 minutes or so was a great example of 24 players playing well to the coaches instructions.  4 goals into the wind to St. Bede’s 2.3.15 meant the 19’s took a handy 15 point lead into half time.  The back six were the cornerstone of this half time lead, repelling many St. Bede’s attacking forays and setting up great counter-attacks with very effective run and carry.

The only blight on the quarter was a serious ankle injury to David Wall, who was starting to really create many opportunities in the forward line.

The boys came out after half time and started to dominate all over the ground.  20 inside 50’s to 4 saw the boys slam on 8.4.52 to 1.1.7 and set up a match winning lead.  We dominated in centre square clearance work, we shared the ball well, our small forwards and on-ballers were running riot and Jack Solomon and Jack Fenner were fantastic targets down forward.

The last quarter started with another Bernard’s goal and 10 minutes in, the game was all but over.  A final quarter 4.4.28 against the wind was another fantastic effort by the boys, and we ended the game with winners all over the park.

Next week, we travel to Central Reserve in Glen Waverley to take on De La Salle in the preliminary final.  Let’s get as many supporters as possible out there to support Woody’s U19 Premier team.
