2014 Playing List Update AND Still seeking an U19 North Coach

16 March 2014

St. Bernard’s FC is pleased to provide an update for the benefit of club members, supporters and sponsors.

The Football sub-committee of the St. Bernard’s Football Club is pleased to provide an update for the benefit of club members, supporters and sponsors regarding the state of the 2014 senior playing group and our Under 18/19 group (“unders”) playing group as we approach the start of the 2014 football season.

After our first hit-out on the weekend against 2013 preliminary finalist, University Blacks, we are pleased to advise you all that the 58 players who played in the 2 games on the weekend came through unscathed, all benefiting from valuable pre-season game time.

As at 16 March 2014, the senior playing group looks something like this:

•96 senior players listed as confirmed or probable players for season 2014.  Of these players, 81 have participated in what has been an excellent pre-season training program thus far.

•These player numbers will vie for spots in one of our three VAFA Premier division teams currently registered with VAFA for season 2014 (1sts, 2nds, 3rds)

•70 of these 96 senior players are Proud, Passionate, REGISTERED as at 16 March 2014.  (Thanks to Jesse Manunzio for this player registration tag line)

•22 top age U19 players from season 2013 are registered to play their first year of senior football in season 2014, a retention rate for these top age players of in excess of 60%; building on the success of the summer Academy program of the past 4 years, which strengthens the quality and number of active players flowing through from the football clubs junior ranks via our “VAFA unders” program and into the senior club.  These 22 players will strengthen the clubs stocks in all three senior sides in season 2014.

•New recruits confirmed for the 2014 season include Jake Calvert (Frankston VFL), Glenn Chivers (St. Kevs OB), Sam Fleming (Portland), Pat Gamwell (returning from EFL), Chad Jones (Claremont), Jayden Malseed (GFL), Alex Mcleod (EDFL), Daniel Segrave (Country Victoria).

•In addition, 2 important “recruits” at the club for season 2014 have made a real impact already after 1 pre-season match.  Josh Madden, returned from 2013 spent in the USA, is a member of the VAFA 2014 State squad and shook off the cobwebs of 12 months away from football in an excellent first up effort on the weekend.  Whilst Ben Considine, older brother to U19 Prem player Will and cousin of Tom and Simon Caven, who is yet to play a VAFA game for the club after injuring his ACL in our last practice match in 2013, was outstanding against Uni Blacks, importantly getting through the game unscathed, whilst also showing how valuable a “recruit” he will be this year.

Saturday’s practice game against Uni Blacks was the first time Tom Caven had led the side out as Captain in his own right, supported by recently appointed 2014 Vice Captain, Adam Bentick, and their 4 other members of the senior club leadership group, Tom Overman, Nic Cooke, Jacob Bevanda and Michael Angel.

Senior coach, Anthony Rock, along with the other members of the senior coaching group (Tim Harvey, Matt O’Connor, Chris Davis, Gary McInytre, Kevin Jones, Brian Moon and Chris Cunningham) have taken the quality of the football clubs pre-season training program to another level through the 2013/14 pre season campaign.

We look forward to the final weeks of pre-season before round 1 against Old Trinity (away) on April 12.

Approximately 48 or 50 young men had their first weekend hit-out last Saturday in an intra-club game before the 2 senior practice matches.  The coaches were all impressed with the quality of football on display, and we are confident of fielding three teams again in season 2014 who will be competitive and which will allow many young men to participate in a supportive, team environment doing what they all love to do – play footy with their mates.

Our numbers for our “VAFA Unders” teams are very strong again, benefiting from the combination of strong retention of 2013 players eligible to play again in the “unders” program for season 2014, as well as solid flow through from our U16’s and new recruits to the club.

In season 2014 we will field three “unders” teams in season 2014:

1.U19 Premier (Rocky Ianello, Coach; Serge Romano, Asst. Coach)

2.U19 North (Coach appointment pending)

3.U18 (Rohan Vahland, Coach; Shane Denahy, Asst Coach)

As at March 16, 2014, our unders player numbers look as follows:

•84 players listed to play, of which 62 are Proud, Passionate, REGISTERED.  10 more players are new to VAFA and have lodged papers, so their registrations are pending.

•Of these 84 players, 19 are U16 players coming through from the junior club, 14 are new to the club (most of whom attend St. Bernard’s College) and 51 players are returning from season 2014.

•St. Bernard’s has 3 players playing with the Calder Cannons TAC squad in season 2014 (Jed Carey, Marcue De Leur and Josh Wallis) as well as 2 players in the U17 Cannons development squad (Charlie Vague and Declan Gilbert).

•Importantly, 81 of the 84 listed “unders” players have trained during the 2013/14 pre-season and Football Academy programs.

•It is very pleasing that of last year’s 55 players who could play again in the 2014 “unders” program, 51 have elected to play.  This is an excellent retention rate, and testimony to the excellent efforts of the team of coaches and parents responsible for the 2013/14 Football Academy.

The “unders” program still requires 1 or 2 match day coaches for the U19 North team.  Existing coaches Rocky Ianello, Serge Romano (both 19 Prem), Rohan Vahland and Shane Denahy (both U18) will be available ALL season to take training for 3 teams – so all we need is 1 or 2 parents/coaches prepared to guide our U19 North squad on game day each Saturday during the season.  Please, STEP UP and ASSIST.  Many young men will benefit from your commitment.
