Senior Club Leadership Group Announced

09 March 2013

The St. Bernard's Committee announced the senior football club leadership group for season 2013

A leadership group of four young men has been selected to lead the club in season 2013.  For the first time in the club's 50 year history, co-captains have been appointed.  Tom Caven, aged just 24, and Adam Bentick, aged 28, will lead the club as co-captains this year.  Adam Bentick, former AFL and VFL footballer, brings a wealth of experience to the role with a strong presence amongst the playing group both on and off the track already having an impact on the group during pre season.  Tom Caven, a dual club Best & Fairest winner and member of the VAFA 2012 team of the year, has developed into a strong leader on-field as well as off-field.  The football sub-committee felt Tom's time was now, having grown into an elite Premier footballer and increasingly developing his natural leadership skills.  The combination of Adam and Tom as co-captains will also allow both players to share the load, leading a senior football club that has doubled in size in the past 8 years.  The co-captain structure, recommended by senior coach Chris Tankard to the football sub-committee, will also allow Adam to mentor Tom in this critical role and also allow Tom to assist Adam's integration into the leadership role of a very young senior playing group.

Assisting Tom and Adam will be co-vice captains, Nic Cooke (aged 21) and Jacob Bevanda (aged 23).  Nic and Jacob were both members of the 2012 leadership group, and are clearly two of the football clubs most capable young men.  Both display significant talent on-field and dedication off-field, both are a fantastic examples of the dedication to work hard for themselves, their teammates and the football club.

The committee would like to formally acknowledge the thorough preparation and quality input provided by Chris Tankard in his recommendations for the 2013 leadership group.  Chris was asked by members of the committee early in season 2011 to ensure he developed quality young men to lead this club for many years to come.  We have no doubt that the inclusion of three quality young men aged 24, 23 and 21 respectively into the club's 2013 leadership group has a lot to do with the guidance and direction these players have received from Chris since he became senior coach of the football club.

We wish Adam and Tom well in their role as co-captains of the St. Bernard's football club.  We also wish Nic and Jacob well in their role as co-vice captains of the St. Bernard's football club.  We are sure every player, member and supporter will get behind the 2013 leadership group and strive as one to achieve a successful season for the St. Bernard's football club, both on and off field.
