Seniors: Undermanned Bernards Find Blacks Too Slick!

At the varsity oval Uni Blacks rested a few and St Bernards rested a dozen key players with Blacks proving too strong in the second half.  All of which of course means nothing as both teams meet again in the 2nd semi final next weekend.

A perfect spring day and finally a good deck at the Uni oval for the second semi rehearsal produced a competitive first half from St Bernards but Uni Blacks proved far too strong in the second half.

The opening term was even in general play, however, St Bernards sloppy disposal going forward caused continual turnovers and allowed Blacks to rebound and pepper the goals but Blacks inaccuracy kept the score-line close and after Alex Singleton sprinted clear and slotted from half forward it was just a one point lead to Blacks at the first break.

St Bernards tackling and pressure early in the second term created some opportunities and with goals to Tom Gleeson and Simon Caven St Bernards looked to be taking the game right up to the ladder leaders but some costly errors allowed the home side to ram on three late goals. With 4.1 to Bernards 3.1 Blacks took a six point margin into the main break.

The third term was all Uni Blacks as their stronger bodies began to take its toll and with Kruse doing well and O’Rourke, Sheehan and Pitt picking off most of St Bernards forward forays the Blacks got on top and never looked back.  Blacks booted 7.5 in the third term to stretch their lead to 40 points. The final term was a repeat of the third with Blacks continually running the ball from half back resulting in another seven goal quarter to run out 79 point winners on the day.

With many key players set to return St Bernards will look to bounce back when both sides meet again next weekend.

Reserves: Undermanned Ressies Struggle Against Blacks!

An undermanned Reserves line up tried valiantly against a strong Uni Blacks line up but in the end simply didn’t have the manpower to stay with their taller and more physically stronger opponents as Blacks secured a first semi final berth with a convincing 51 point win.

Blacks shot away to an early lead and with regular senior player Cam Turner providing drive and big Jayden Foster and Justin Crameri looking dangerous up forward Blacks booted 4.2 to St Bernards 1.1

St Bernards with Paddy Gamwell doing well across half back and Plugger Sullivan marking well fought back but unfortunately couldn’t convert their forward 50 entries. Nevertheless the determined Ressies remained in touch trailing by just 20 points at the main break.

An early goal to St Bernards brought them within 18 points but midway through the third term Blacks physical strength and run was starting to show and they finished the quarter more strongly to stretch the lead to 29 points at the final break.

Despite some inaccuracy Blacks were well in control throughout the final term booting 3.6 while holding St Bernards to two points. In the end St Bernards could only manage three goals for the game underlining Uni Blacks dominance in the second half.

Paddy Gamwell’s four quarter effort made him the standout, Plugger Sullivan did well up forward, Jake Calvert showed some nice glimpses in his return to the line up while Nick Burgin, Luke Madden, Ben Peart and Daniel Seagrave also battled hard.

Next Saturday will see the Ressies face off against Old Xavs in their second semi final.

Thirds: Bernards Run Into Rampant Blacks!

The Thirds ran into a rampant Uni Blacks outfit at Crawford Reserve going down by 105 points

Kevin Jones reports: The thirds completed the final round of the home and away season by facing off against the powerful Uni-blacks outfit at Crawford oval. The final score will remain in the record books; however the coaching group was more than happy with the effort shown by the undermanned group.  Even though the score-line does not reflect that statement the boys fought it out from start to finish and it was a good hit out for a few blokes coming back from injury.

The thirds team is all about providing an environment for developing our large number of first year senior players and mixing them with a number of experienced senior players who provide on and off-field mentoring.  It also allows senior players returning from injury to get valuable game time as well as getting confidence back into players pushed out of the two senior teams due to form, absence or both. Our player numbers and talent  is always determined by what is happening in the Senior and Reserve squads, the past few weeks have been a test of our resolve and depth. We have come out the other side in pretty good shape.

All three senior sides will now compete in a final series which is a reward for the huge effort Craig Connelly and the Administration has put in since the end of last season. Hopefully the club will get some silverware from this campaign. Thanks to Bernie Shepheard, Nick Hughes, Under 19 players Pat Moloney and Josh Dwyer for answering the call and all of them played serviceable games.

The Thirds now take on Uni-Blues in a sudden death final at 9:15 am on Father’s day at Elsternwick Park. We will be doing our utmost to hopefully add another win to what has been a successful season so far for this group.

Unders

Not a good weekend for our ‘Unders’ boys with all three going down in their second semi finals. Under 19 Premier were outgunned by a slick St Kevins line up and will look to bounce back in the Prelim against Old Xavs next week. Under 19 North found a red hot Ivanhoe outfit too good and will now face Wyndham Suns next week in the Prelim, Under 18 Colts also found ladder leader Mazenod too strong on the day and will play Old Westbourne in next weeks Prelim.
