Big V Squad Members Everywhere

9 individual nominees for 3 Big V Squads is an excellent achievement

One of the reasons many young men are attracted to playing VAFA football is the lure of playing for the "Big V".  To be nominated by State selectors for a State Squad is an outstanding achievement for any player, and in season 2015, nine different St Bernards players have been nominated for 3 different State Squads.

All of the players listed below will work with St Bernard's coaching staff, conditioning staff and with the Big V staff to ensure their possible Big V playing duties are well managed within the context of a long and arduous football season.

Senior Squad

Obviously the pinnacle of VAFA football, to be nominated for the senior squad is an enormous honour, and just to be nominated in the expanded squad is incredibly difficult to attain.  For the upcoming July 12 game against Vic Country, St Bernards has an amazing six (6) players nominated for the squad; the equal highest number of players nominated along with the 6 representatives from Uni Blacks.  Congratulation goes to:

Tom Caven (Captain of St Bernards, FB)

Simon Caven ("Swingman" CHB/CHF)

Tom Sullivan (On ball)

Alex Mcleod (On ball)

Tristan Cartledge (Ruck)

Alex Boyse (Medium forward who has kicked 25 goals in 9 VAFA games)

Alex Boyse nomination is particularly noteworthy, given Alex only debuted for St. Bernard's seniors, in what was Alex first ever senior game of football, in round 1 this year.  An old boy of St Bernards College, Alex may well be the fastest ever VAFA player nominated for the Big V senior squad after only playing 9 senior VAFA games; these 9 being Alex ONLY senior games of football.  Clearly an impressive achievement for a young man who is clearly enjoying season 2015 at St. Bernard's OCFC.

U23 Carnival Squad

The 3 day carnival being held in Tasmania occurs every two years, and some of the VAFA's best young talent is selected to train as an initial Big V U23 squad.  St Bernard's players selected this year are:

Simon Caven

Tom Sullivan

Michael Caven

Michael Caven's inclusion in this squad is an enormous achivement for Michael.  Similar to Alex Boyse, Michael debuted this season in round 1, and has only played 9 senior games of football.  Still 18 years of age, Micheal is a product of the St Bernard's development program as well as a College Old Boy, and his inclusion in this U23 squad reflects what has been a very impressive start to what we hope will be a long and distibuished playing career at St. Bernards OCFC.

U19 Squad

The preliminary U19 Big V squad includes 3 St Bernard's U19 players.  These are:

Michael Caven (Defender)

Zach O'Halloran (Ruck / FFwd)

Will Considine (Key Back/Key Fwd/Ruck)

All 3 players were members of the 2014 U19 Premier Premiership team, and all are still eligible for U19 football in season 2015.  Michael and Zach have both taken the step to playing regular senior football in season 2015; Michael as a regular 1sts player, and with Zach choosing to play 2nds and (hopefully) 1sts football in season 2015 in an attempt to develop his football playing against bigger bodies each week.  Zach was BOG on Saturday in the 2's win against a strong Uni Blacks side.  Will Considine debuted for the 1sts in round 2 this year and has played four (4) 1sts games and five (5) U19 Premier games thus far in season 2015.  Will is a developing key position type who will continue to push for senior selection given his recent excellent U19 Prem form.

All 3 players richly deserve the honour of being included in the initial U19 Big V Squad.

Congratulations to all of the above players for being recognised by their inclusion in the above Big V squads.
