St Bernards Seniors Out Slog Beaumaris

27 April 2015

All three senior teams won hard fought, tight contests against Beaumaris on the weekend on a FANTASTIC new playing surface

SENIORS

St Bernards 13.17.95 defeated Beaumaris 10.8.68

Best: B.Considine, A.Boyse, J.Bennie, A.Singleton, M.Angel, A.Bentick

Goals: A.Boyse 4, A.Campbell 3, A.Bentick 2, C.Jones 2, N.Burgin 1, T.Cartledge 1

The resurfaced oval, landscaped hill and new car park produced a fantastic setting for the big ANZAC Day Game.  But the wet weather produced conditions that required players to show ANZAC-type courage over a slippery ball. It was clear from the first bounce that Beaumaris were going to be a tough opponent.

Our midfield worked hard all day against a very determined Beaumaris.  Adam Bentick is in fine form, he continues to work tirelessly all around the ground.  Alex Singleton and James Bennie were standouts. Their willingness to stay over the ball and their pace to break the lines took its toll on the opposition.

Adam Campbell continued his strong form from last week and provided a big target up forward, unfortunately, a whack in the nose ended his day early.  But it was Alex Boyse who chipped in with some great marks and accurate kicking for goal.  His Inspector Gadget-like mark, then goal, in front of the newly named Perret Pavilion thrilled the crowd.  His addition to an already potent forward line is going to trouble opposition teams.

But the story of the day was the work of Ben Considine in the backline. On a tricky day for backs, where a wet ball was coming in quickly, he was steady all day. He marked well and started many forward moves. It’s great to see Ben feeling comfortable in the backline and playing some great footy. Ben was awarded the ANZAC medal.

St Bernards Thirds 2015 Round 3 vs Beaumaris

Final score: St Bernards 8-8-56 defeated Beaumaris 4-10-34

Goals: D.Ryan 3, M.Farrant 3, J.Holland, F. McNicol

Best:  M.Farrant, S.Cannatelli, J.Holland, U.Zoric, D.Hurley, D.Ryan

St Bernard’s thirds recorded their first win for the season but had to work overtime to shake off a determined Beaumaris outfit in slippery conditions at the pit. Persistent rain greeted us and both teams were desperate for a win. The Beauey boys were quickly out of the blocks and on the scoreboard before we steadied to take a 3 point lead at the first break.

The pill was like a cake of soap as both sides struggled to master the conditions, it was a battle of defences. We managed to conjure up 3 goals and kept our opponents to 1 goal and take an 18 point lead into the long break.

The drizzly rain continued into the third term and the scoring opportunities were few and far between as both teams refused to concede ground. One solitary goal to us during this term confirmed the evenness of the contest. A 23 point three quarter time margin would not guarantee us victory against this tough opponent.

The ¾ time message was to dig deep, up the work rate and bring home an overdue victory. The Beauey boys fought it out to the end but could not bridge the gap as we ran out 22 point winners to finally get onto the winners list for season 2015. Next up assignment for the thirds is against Uni-Blues with a 9:20 am kick-off.
